Jim's Story

Life Greetings! After high school I worked various jobs until finally joining The Salvation Army. I graduated from The Salvation Army School For Officer's Training last July. I was part of the response team that served during the 9/11 attack at WTC. I was also assinged to help provide Christmas assistance for the families that suffered loss of life/job. I am married to Tricia Tanner, and we are currently stationed in Newburgh, NY. As Officers in The Salvation Army, we are responsible for the spiritual and social needs of our community; lots of responsibility; the people here really struggle in many ways. We do not have children although we have a dog (Doberman) and two cats (Doberman chew toys). We expect to be stationed in Newburgh for at least 5 years, but that can change at a moments notice in TSA. I would love to hear from some of you folks, I know that many of you have interesting stories to tell. I pray everyone is well and hope life is all you wanted it to be and more. Ok, we have been in Newburgh for about three years now and it has been a challenge t...Expand for more
o say the least. Newburgh has been rated the most violent city per capita in Ny 3 years running, and has the second highest poverty rate of any city in the tri-state area of NY, NJ, and Ct (only Newark NJ is worse). I cannot get over the staggering amount of theft that takes place to support the staggering amount of drug abuse. We have started an after-school program and teenage drop in center for the youth in the community. So far these two programs have proven very successful, but the amount of work needed to be done is over-whelming. We are also operating a soup kitchen which is serving breakfast and dinner, provide a food and bread pantry, and offer utility bill and rental assistance. We set up a computer lab that the community can use for various activities including research, music lessons, and ged classes. Marriage continues to be good and challenging, but having two strong willed people in any relationship will create some moments of..um..intense fellowship. All in all life is good in many ways, we are truly blessed. Well until the next update... Jim
