Attended Barstow Jr. High and HS from mid year 1958 through summer 1960 (Go Riffians). Moved to Santa Maria CA and graduated 1962 (Go Saints). Brief stint at Alan Hancock Jr. College then into Army, Stationed in Germany assigned to an Armored Cavalry unit, then Officer Candidate School and onto Army helicopter flight school. Arrived in Vietnam just in time for Tet Offensive of 1968. Came home just in time for my wedding to Judy Porter, little sister of my high school buddy and HS classmate Paul Porter. Moved to Ft Rucker, Alabama first child is born. Then second trip to "Nam", just to make sure it was as bad as I thought it was. Yep!! Back to states and moved to Ft Dix, NJ second child born, figured out the cause and got of the service. Moved back to Santa Maria, opps third kid. d it turns out they are a lot more fun. Kids have moved around so the wife and I travel to visit them in Missouri, New York City and Maryland (until recently). Now my daughter and 2 grandkids are back to CA in the San Jose area. No longer working, wanted to get my 101K back to a 401K status to retire. It never recovered, but i retired anyway.
In March 2014 my son was killed in an accident and my wife and I are now Guardians of his two children, Emily and Matthew. They are 11 and 10 respectively and have brought a new reality to our retirement. We enjoy and love these grandchildren immensely and they are our fountain of youth. I am going to learn new math whether I like it or not. Another great aspect of chasing after them is my health. I finally lost those 15 Lbs. I couldn't shake and am keeping it off. Keep your fingers crossed for us, as the art of raising children has changed a great deal since our last one left the nest some twenty years ago.
