Jim's Story

Jim's schools included WH Gaston Jr. High, Pleasant Grove High School and W.W. Samuell High School (with a lot of luck graduted in 1959). He later attended East Texas Bapt College, Calif Bapt College and Dallas Bapt Univ. He earned a B.A., B.S. and M.BA. Joined USMC in 1963, two (2) tours in Vietnam. Grunt with 2/3 and 1/9. Awarded two purple hearts and a few other medals. Came back a little messed up, physically and mentally, and received a medical retirement. Worked for ASCAP (music licensing - no mucic talent but knew a little about the business side). Gemini (plastics) and Anchor (carnival vendor) Also taught school at Riverside Poly (Calif) and Riverside Christian High School and coached a little.(imagine that). Prior to retireing he bought a small farm in Southern Middle Tennessee (about 40 cows, 8 horses, 5 dogs, lots of skunks and a wife (not necessarily in that order), Donna (California girl who was born in the south). We met at First Baptist Church of Pomona (a huge American Bapist Church) and have been married about 135 years. Not really, it only been 35 years. She believes the old adage that says "The best thing about having been married to a Marine is that when you die, you go straight to heaven - you've already been through hell." We will stay married though, nobody else is mean enough to put up with either of us. They raised three (3) sons. Oldest (age 49) is a RN in Springfield,MO. He joined the USMC exact'y 18 years after I did and put a little time on USS New Jersey and was in Lebanon when the Marine barracks was bombed. Middle son (age 45) graduated from Claremont (Calif) but had a bad accident when he was 19 and is totally disabled. We still take care of him. Youngest son (age 28) still lives in Calif. He was the Defensive Player of the Year at Norco High School - Mt. View League his Senior year but turned down opportunity to further edu...Expand for more
cation and football pursuits. He works for a floor installer and refinisher now and is trying to buy the company. Some may or may not remeber me as the little nerdy guy who went by Henry (his Dad's name also) in High School. Grew up a little and definitely got bigger. My greatest achievement in High School was getting to stand next to Sharon Danyluk at graduation (I was the last 'C', she was the first 'D". I was a member of the now defunct Pleasant Mound Baptist Church most of my life - guess the Baptist part was ingrained in me. Looking at my picture in the Annual (on line, I lost mine in a barn fire) I don't believe I was ever that young but I wish I was still that light weight. After Jeanie Odom passed away I was probably the youngest person in the class (never as smart as Jeanie - what a lady she was). I partnered with her many times in Latin class (9th grade). Somethings you just never forget.. One of the real injustices of life is that a rascal like me should live so long while a princess like her should have such a short life. I grateful for what I have had, just wish hers had been longer. I studied Latin in High School and Konia Greek in College - two languages nobody speaks. Then I went to Vietnamese language school in the Marine Corps but never wanted to speak it after I returned home. Maybe languages weer not my forte. . Nearly broke but sure enjoying life. If I was a little more computer savvy I could probably do a better job with things like this. Maybe I'll get a little better before I get really old. Since I got on this site I have sure enjoyed reading about some of the lives and accomplishments of my classmates. They were, and still are, some incredible people. I was very saddened to hear Jack Mattingly had passed. I numbered him as a rea good friend along with his younger brother, Joe Pat Mattingly, who passed earlier than Jack.

Amber waves of grain just in front of my hay pasture.
Cow grazing pasture behind my house. Just over the hill my back fence meets the fence of the famous 'Milky Way Farm.'
