Jim's Story
Life
Since graduating...well first there were 6 years in the Navy. I went to various Navy schools (MM-A (Great Lakes, IL), Nuclear Power School (Orlando, FL) & Nuclear Prototype Training Unit (Idaho Falls, ID)) before joining the nuclear surface fleet serving on board USS Enterprise and USS Texas as a reactor/propulsion plant mechanic. I served and participated in Operations Earnest Will, Praying Mantis & Desert Storm (no, I didn't shoot anything...I made steam, but it was important steam for launching planes and turning props). I was fortunate to see the Phillipines, Panama, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Kenya, South Korea, Dubai & Jebal Ali (actually scratch Jebal Ali...it was utterly worthless). Just before I got out of the Navy, I was married to Laurel Sterrett twice...once, legally immediately prior to my deployment for Desert Storm as one is paid more in the military for nothing less than just being married and then another time, ceremonially with friends and family at the Rose Garden in San Jose after I returned and was discharged from the Navy.
After the Navy I worked for 7 years at a chemical recycling plant in E. Palo Alto as a plant mechanic. Originally it was an interesting job surrounding by quite unique people. I added welding, electrical, pipe fitting, fluid system design & heavy equipment operation to my abilities. My interest in this job began to wane as I became aware of my supervisor's exploitation of my (and my partner Tim's) reliability and general capabilities coupled with realization of the limited future in my position. My work schedule provided the opportunity to try a couple other fields in my days off. I worked in the kitchen at La Pastaia for a while, and though I enjoyed it and still cook I realized that I didn't want to work Chef's hours (weekends, nights & holidays). Next I worked at the Thomas Fogarty winery/vineyard up above Woodside. This was a great experience and someday I'd still like to wind up as a winemaker. I also ...Expand for more
had returned to school taking night classes at Foothill College during this time and was living in Menlo Park right behind Kepler's Books off of El Camino.
I finished my pre-reqs at Foothill College and transfered to UC Berkeley to study Molecular and Cellular Biology in 1996. Laurel and I (with the generous help of her father) bought a house in the Rockridge neighboorhood of Oakland and we moved up there so I could go to school. Having our own house provided the opportunity to get a dog so Laurel and I adopted Gus, a Rhodesian Ridgeback from a breeder in Visalia. We loved him so much and he was such a great dog that we got him a companion, Fanny, from the same breeder and parents 2 years later. I found a position as an undergrad researcher in a protein crystallography lab and graduated in 1998. At the suggestion of my advisor and another professor I was recruited to graduate school at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla.
This decision predicated the biggest move yet (post Navy) to the San Diego area. We found a really nice place in Solana Beach right next to Del Mar and a 15-20 minute walk to the beach. Over the course of the next 6 years we adopted Leo, another ridgeback, from the Ridgeback Rescue that we had been working with to provide foster care to homeless ridgebacks. The dogs served as a good prelude to our next addition, our son Wallace in 2005. Unfortunately, in a poor alignment of fate, our first dog Gus became ill and was euthanised about 2 weeks before Wallace was born painfully demonstrating the circle of life. It took 6 1/2 years to finish grad school, but I did receive my PhD in Macromolecular and Cellular Structure and Chemistry at the end of 2005.
I am now a Staff Scientist with a pharmaceutical start-up company, Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, in Woodland Hills. I am commuting to Woodland Hills and working here on Tu, We & Th while working from home on Mo and Fr. It has proven to be worth the hassle as the job is very interesting.
