Jim's Story

Life I got my BSEE in 1987 from an MU coordinated engineering program that let me live at home and go to school at UMKC. I got a few scholarships my senior year at Center - one for a poster I created, one from UMKC and another from KC Power and Light. That helped me get through school. I also taught guitar from 83 to 86 at Turner Music at Metcalf South. Despite going to a commuter school I did get a taste of "Animal House" when I joined a fraternity (Sig-Ep). They did have good parties. I worked at Rockwell (now Boeing) in LA from 1987-1989. It was a lot of fun and I made some great friends while working on a "Star Wars" related program at the Electro-Optical Center. I dabbled in the songwriting scene in LA while I lived there. I moved back to KC and bought a house in 1990. I started my own computer graphics firm in 1993 and named it Trinity Animation. This was a hobby in the early 1990s that gradually became a business for me, and I went full time in 1994. I hired my first employees in 1996. Right now I have 8. My firm did effects work on the Sony/Tristar film "Starship Troopers" in 1997, and we got some local press for that. It was a lucky break on a film that people remember. But we don't really focus on Hollywood stuff, it's hard to do that in KC without flying all the time. We mostly produce architectural renderings, technical presentations, and also create designs for manufacture. Trinit...Expand for more
y also is a popular source of 3D software on our e-commerce site. I've written or co-written 4 books for New Riders about learning 3d software. The books are specifically about 3ds max and Maya. The last was in 2004 and is called "Maya 5 Fundamentals". I've self published some titles too and we mainly sell these on Amazon. I recently got a nice honor, I was made UMKC Alumnus of the year 2004 for the engineering school, along with co-honorees from the other schools like KC Mayor Kay Barnes, actor Connor Trinnear from ENTERPRISE and Nathan Granner of the American Tenors. I got to meet some amazing people at the day-long honors ceremony in October of 2004. Also they did a nice show where I could invite my parents and be honored and it was a truly great moment. I married attorney Gail Christy in 1994 and we live in Lee's Summit. We built a new house in 2006 that backs up to the park and it has been really nice living here. My job keeps me kind of busy but I have some spare time for fun/hobbies, mainly cars and guitars. I like late model corvettes and play acoustic guitar. I got a an orange 2007 Corvette most recently, my fifth (75, 01, 03, 05) and put a lot of custom chrome on it. I've learned to play drums in the last year. I like to learn complex acoustic songs for guitar, like Michael Hedges music. I also spend a fair amount of time surfing/wasting time on the internet and watching the tube.
