James's Story

On the day we graduated I was planning to go to UCLA. However, the Department of the Navy offered me an NROTC scholarship to the University of Minnesota, so I moved east. I had a nice time at the U of M and met Sally. We were married in the spring of 1970 and recently celebrated our 50th anniversary. I went into the Marine Corps that year and served as a Marine officer until 1990. My first ten years were mostly on the West Coast, including Camp Pendleton, San Diego and Japan. Sally is two years younger than I and finished her degree at San Diego State. She graduated in 1974 and began a career as an accountant and pursued that until she finally retired in 2011. Our daughter Marnie was born when I was at the Artillery Officer Advanced Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 1978. Our son Tom was born two years later at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Sally and I learned to sail in San Diego and we became very serious about it while we lived in North Carolina (sounds and coastal waters). My last nine years in the Marine Corps were mostly in the Washington, D.C. area and we kept a boat on the Chesapeake Bay. When I retired from the Marine Corps we moved back to Sally's home town of Mendota Heights, Minnesota (just south of Saint Paul). Sally continued her financial career with the SuperValu Corporation. I gravitated into information technology, first with the Wausau Insurance Company and then with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. I had obtained an MBA in Finance from Virginia Tech and then earned an MS in Software Engineering from the University of Saint Thomas. I describe myself as a software developer/project manager. Minnesota has a short sailing season so we changed our family activities to canoeing and backpacking. Both Marnie and Tom developed a lifetime passion for the outdoors. We all also have a keen interest in traveling. I had been to Norway in 1980 on a NATO exercise and had raved about it, so we all took a family trip there in the summer of 1995. Both children graduated from the University of Minnesota, one in 2000 and the other in 2004. Marnie now lives in Bismarck, North Dakota (a long story) and has five children. Tom lives a few miles away in Mendota Heights and has two children. As we became empty nesters Sally and I stepped up our wanderlust and we put some effort into mastering French. p to France in 2000 and have gone at least once a year (except 2009) ever since. I became an independent consultant in 2009, mostly for HealthPartners, a Minnesota Insurer and healthcare provider. Sally retired in 2011 and we celebrated by renting an apartment in Paris for a month in the fall. We hosted both children and their spouses and Sally's sister and brother-in-law. We liked that well enough that we rented a villa on the Cote d' Azur in the spring of 2012 and had 16 guests over a four week period, once again including our children and their spouses. While we were there we kept seeing sailboats and were inspired to start sailing again. Since then we have been sailing for a week each summer in the Apostle Islands National Seashore area of Lake Superior. We have also made three one week trips to sail in the British Virgin Islands, a week in the Abacos and a week sailing the Dalmatian Coast of the Adriatic. We are fortunate to have friends and family who are willing to crew. And modern technology is such that I could connect to work and respond to questions while on a sailboat thousands of miles from the office. We had a great adventure in the summer of 2014. Our goal was to give the grandchildren a fairytale experience and we rented two chateaux in France, one for two weeks in Perigord and the other for a week in the Pyrenees. We had both children and spouses and all the grandchildren and it was a wonderful time. We finished with a few days in Paris and were there for Bastille Day. We took Tom and his wife and daughter sailing in the Apostle Islands in 2015 and had a great trip there on the 4th of July, 2016 with Marnie and her family. I attended the reunion in October 2016 and it was great to see so many people again. We had a great fall 2016 trip to France with Marnie and her husband and with other friends. We spent Christmas 2016 sailing in the BVI with Marnie and her family. I retired at the end of June, 2017 and we immediately left for Italy and Austria with Marnie's family. It was a great trip followed by a sailing trip on Lake Superior with Tom and his family. We hope to keep sailing and traveling in the future and find our greatest pleasure is to be with our children and their families. So my life has gone well and it is good to read that so many of you have had a life well lived. Best wishes to all of you.
