Jim's Story
After graduation from high school I attended Yuba Jr. College for 2 years and transferred to Chico State. In 2/62 I needed a break so I enlisted in the U.S. Army for 3 years and found myself assigned to the U.S. Army Security Agency in Rothwesten, W. Germany. I met my future wife on post (she had been an AFS student in W. Germany in 1958 & majored in German in HS and at the U of Minnesota & came back to Germany to visit the family she had stayed with - went to work for the U.S. Government as a Service Club Girl & wound up on our post). We were married 46 years and have 3 children & 8 grandchildren. After leaving the military in 1/65 I returned to college and graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1967. We worked in Social Work from 1967 to 1975 when I quit public service and worked for a friend for a year. I spent 1976-1986 working for Southern Pacific Railroad. 1986-1987 I worked at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant as a computer operator. From 1987-2007 I worked for the Santa Barbara C...Expand for more
ounty Probation Department, the first 5 years as a Deputy Probation officer in an armed unit doing field work, and the last 15 years I functioned as a Civil Court Investigator investigating petitions for Stepparent Adoptions & Guardianship of Children and Conservatorship of the Elderly & Disabled. I retired in June of 2007. In my leisure time I enjoy puttering in the yard, playing the piano and reading.
We were always active in our church. We worked in Marriage encounter for 6 1/2 years, and had a prison ministry at CMC State Prison in San Luis Obispo for 6 1/2 years as well. In 1986 my wife and I became professed Secular Franciscans (a valid lay order in the Catholic Church) and spent 24 wonderful years teaching formation, and serving in leadership in that group.
Sad to say, my wife Loris, whom I married on 5/23/64, passed away on June 3, 2010 after suffering from advanced breast cancer for 2 1/2 years. We spent 46 wonderful years together. She was the love of my life, and I miss her terribly.
