Jim's Story

After CCHS, I went on to CU for my undergrad (BA-Biology) and grad (MA-Neuroscience/Pharmacology) degrees. Between 1983 and 1999, I worked in clinical patient care in several Denver area hospitals as well as working at area colleges/universities teaching in healthcare education programs. In Sept. 1995, I finally settled down and got married to Brooke -- a beautiful "Southern Bell" from Georgia, who coincidentally happened to actually share my birthplace of Washington, DC, and have a birthday just one day after mine! In August 1996 we welcomed our son, Jared Alexander, into our lives. In June, 1999, Caroline Marie expanded our family horizons. In December, 1999, our family moved to the Washington DC area, where I used my healthcare education background to land a great position with the nation's largest medical specialty society -- the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Between Feb. 2000 and July, 2008, I authored over 500 news and feature articles for the society's national newspaper -- you can google me or "Psychiatric News" if you'd like to take a look! I continue to be a senior contributing writer today. While at APA, I also authored a series of white papers concerning the availability of high quality mental health care to each and every person in the USA, regardless of any discriminatory factors such as race/gender/insurance coverage or ability to pay out of pocket. In July 2008, we enjoyed a significant victory when Congress passed and the president signed into law the nation's first regulations requiring insurance companies to make benefits for mental health disorders equal to those they extend to any other medical disorder. I also wrote a series of speeches and testimony for APA leadership which were delivered to the U.S. Senate and regulatory and federal agencies such as the FDA, several of the National Institutes of Hea...Expand for more
lth, and the Institute of Medicine. These speeches and testimony eventually resulted in significant gains in availability and access to care for mental health disorders. Most significantly, we welcomed new federal regulations mandating that health insurance plans maintain open access to, and guaranteed availability of, FDA approved medications for depression, bipolor disorder, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders. During my last two years at APA (2006-2008) I served as the senior writer and lead media liaison for APA's Office of Communications & Public Affairs. In May 2008, I found myself to be a newly divorced single father. In July 2008, Jared (now 14), Caroline (now 11), Bailey (our 7 year old Bichon!) and I moved back to the Denver area -- settling in Highlands Ranch near my mother, sister, and two nieces. Having the support of my family has been invaluable in my working through the single-dad thing. Thankfully, the kids are adjusting to all of the changes in their lives and are at that stage now where they grow like weeds and are bankrupting me because of the food bill! Today, I'm back working at a local hospital on the south side of town, taking care of patients during three 12-hour shifts each week. On the other days, I continue to search for a new full-time communications/PR position while also working on building my own new company, specializing in communications, public & media relations for the healthcare and non-profit sectors. With the current economic meltdown hitting us all, starting up a new business is certainly a significnat challenge. However, I think many of you will remember that while I was at Creek, I faced some pretty significant challanges that almost killed me and my chance to graduate! All in all, life continues to be a wonderful gift and I'm pretty sure my game is up to the current challenges!
