Jim's Story

REVISED 6/13/10 Now RETIRED ... sort of. Been doing a fair amount of 'substitute' teaching. I've done every grade level from K - 8 except 4th. After working in sales & management in the interstate trucking industry for 23 years, and then as a working partner in an automotive transmission repair shop for 15 years, teaching is a blast. I wish I had discovered it earlier. RECENT HIGHLIGHTS: Two years ago [August 2008] we went to Hawaii to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary ... we were only 17 years late. This Spring [2010] we went to Rome - a 9 day trip: 5 nights in Rome and 2 nights in Assisi plus a day over and a day back. Our departure was during the volcano ash problems across Europe. The Rome Airport closed at 7am the morning we were scheduled to depart. The short version of a very convoluted story is that we got out on the ONLY flight that got out of Rome that day [after being told we would be stuck for at least 5 days]. This summer we are going to drive to Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Parks. After that I will be taking a group of High-school and college aged students on a 'mission' trip to the Shreveport Louisiana area this [2010] summer for 2 weeks. We'll mostly be doing home repairs. HISTORICAL NOTES Currently living in Muncie IN. Suspect this will probably be our final resting place - been here since 1979 this time around. Attended University of Toledo earning BBA in 1972. Married Rozann Andrews (Bedford HS class of 1961) in Aug 1966. She's a former [now retired] Middle-School Science teacher. Three children: Monica, b. 1970, married, 7 yr old girl and 4 yr old boy, Columbus OH; Michael, b. 1974, married, no children, Buffalo NY; Nicholas, b. 1978, married, 5yr old girl, and a 1 yr old girl, Ft. Wayne IN. Still very active in civic and church organizations, especially Youth Ministry. We still follow Detroit Tigers & RED WINGS. Just because we're here, we also follow the Colts [especially since Detroit no longer has a football team]. WHERE HAVE WE LIVED? As a bachelor, I lived in Cleveland OH for 2 years. Then moved back to Toledo and got married in 1966. After leaving Toledo in 1972, we lived in Muncie IN, Valparaiso IN, Monroe MI, and back to Muncie IN. Those moves were all same company job transfers. FUN EXPERIENCE[S} Being an identical twin still has the opportunity to confuse people. My brother Jack teaches and coaches at a...Expand for more
High School in Memphis TN. On a couple of occasions [with the permission of his principal] I've 'subbed' for him in some of his classes. We don't tell the kids. They first notice something is different but they're not quite sure what it is - usually it is my lack of a southern accent of any kind. Then there are things I cannot answer because I'm not there everyday. We have a good time with it until usually about 10-15 minutes into the class - that's when he walks in. It makes for a fun time. On one occasion he had me be the keynote speaker at his Fall Woman's Sports Awards Banquet. The women athletes and their parents and friends were in total confusion as the evening began to unfold - they'd talk to me, usually in glowing terms about the just completed season, then see him - or the other way around - a lot of fun. On another occasion, friends of mine were in St Louis and were very surprised when they ran into me at a river-boat casino ... only it wasn't me, it was Jack. Similarly, other friends of mine happened to be in the left-field upper deck at a Detroit Tiger game when they noticed me setting 2 rows behind them ... you guessed it - it wasn't me. I was in a night-club in TN one evening when a young man and his wife came up to me so excited to see me. "Coach ... coach! Do you remember me? I played for you at Christian Brothers College back in 198X!" He was so embarrassed when I told him I wasn't his former coach, but was coach's twin brother. THINK YOU REMEMBER ME? Did you think I was: nerdy ... or a dork ... or smart but shy ... or stupid ... or a loud mouth ... or a cut-up ... or a suck-up ... or was never quite sure which one of the twins I was ... or pretentious ... or nicest person you ever met ... or funny ... or interesting ... or dull ... or fun to be around ... or best friend material ... or timid ... or too serious ... or not serious enough ... or a flake ... or a stick-in-the-mud ,,, or mean ,,, or sarcastic ... or a pessimist ... or an optimist ... or an encourager ... or what? By my recollection, I was not nearly as out-going and social as my brother. If I walked into a room full of people, I would probably head for a corner and not talk to too many of you. Time and necessity seem to have a way of changing things [and people]. Next time we meet I hope you'll leave with an impression that let's you remember me more clearly. Hevenu shalom aleikhem.
