Jim's Story
Life
It's true. This is the class I WOULD have graduated with had I not quit school. But, things turned out well!
I got a GED in '74, and spent many years working on boats in Pompano Beach. Then, at 29, I decided to give up boats and go to college. For those who remember, I write poetry and songs, and I decided to become a writer. I went to the University of Florida and graduated in '86. However, the best job I was offered after school was as an editor at the paper here in Gainesville, The Sun. One day led to the next, and I spent 12 years on the News Desk, working my way up to Weekend News Editor.
Three years ago, I completely changed careers again. I still work for the paper, but now I am the Systems Editor, and I work on computers. Interestingly, I stopped writing during my editing years. Now, I have begun writing again.
I met my wife, Yvonne, the second day I was in school! We married after I graduated, and we raised Yvo...Expand for more
nne's daughter, Jennifer, and we are raising our son, Chris, who is now 12.
As a college reporter, I became enamored of the river that forms the northern border of Alachua County  where Gainesville is located. This river, the Santa Fe, is a major tributary of the Suwannee. In 1987, we fufilled a dream and bought 10 acres of land on the river. We lived in a trailer while we built our own home. We began the house in '92 and moved in in '95. It's a great life!
Greetings to any of you who remember this old hippie. I turned out all right!
Update:
It's been 6 years since I wrote the above. Chris is 18 and will be graduating from high school in a month. Crazy how the time goes!
Chris has turned himself into an elite runner and will almost certainly be running for a college next fall. He recently finished 3rd in the state championship for the mile (1600 meters for you actual track people). It's been quite a wonderful ride!
