Jim's Story

Life Hey all... After WHS I went to Trenton State, which is now The College of NJ. I majored in History and pursued minors in Philosophy and German, which led me to study abroad in Frankfurt, Germany. There I discovered beer. Seeing as I had also joined the TCNJ lacrosse team, this revelation was harmonious with my new lifestyle. Life was good. When I got back I also discovered a profound interest in Buddhism and Daoism, so I started learning Mandarin Chinese. I stayed on at TCNJ for a 5th year, where I did a Senior Honors thesis about how modern music can galvanize marginal political elements through the creation of a unifying subculture. For contrasting examples I used the San Francisco hippie movement and German Neo-Nazi skinheads. I also kept playing lacrosse, which I've grown to love. During that year I was living in the heart of Trenton, in an crazy four-story party house with my girlfriend Mairin (now my wife), two college buddies (Tracy and Joe) several hundred gallons worth of fish tanks and none other than Kevin Hoel. After graduation, Mairin and I recognized that we needed to grow as separate people if we had hopes of spending our lives together. So I moved to Beijing to teach English and she moved out to Seattle. While in Beijing I learned taijiquan, a Daoist martial art, and learned why the Buddha smiles. I only stayed a year, and when I got back to the States I headed ...Expand for more
out to Seattle to visit Mairin. Amazing city. I easily could have lived there, except my deep NJ roots keep me coming home. So back to NJ we came, and got an apartment in Red Bank because I had gotten a job teaching history at Rumson-Fair Haven High School. Serendipitously, the high school was starting a Boys Lacrosse team that year, and I had the outstanding fortune to become the head coach. In the time since, the team's been 40-10 and I've grown to adore working at RFH. The kids are great and I've made meaningful friendships among the staff. There is a core group of 12-14 young teachers who hang out on the weekends, but of course I still see Kevin. Kevin was actually my best man this past summer, as Mairin and I finally tied the knot. We bought a house in Neptune City, just north of Belmar, where I can smell the sea air as I practice taijiquan each morning. I also still play the drums and have converted my basement into a music studio for band practices. Except I'm more into jazz than the heavy metal of my high school days. I'll send you a copy of our CD if you're interested. Or, if you like, drop me a line and we'll get together. Whether or not we were friends in high school, I had so much fun at the 10 year reunion I'd like to see some Blue Devils again. So whoever you are, I hope you're well, and if you're a class of '96er, I hope to see you again soon! Cheers, Jim
