Jim's Story

Update: May 2010 at the bottom. Life (2005) (scroll down for new update) I've spent a little over 12 years of my career managing large construction projects around the world, the rest of the time I worked on large projects around the USA. As of May 2005, I've been working in Kazakhstan for 22 months as Director of Construction for the largest Coal Mine in the World. ww.bogatyr. kz Work has included relocations to: the Oilfields of Prudhoe Bay Alaska, Florida, England, Atlanta, Alabama, Mongolia, Tennessee, San Antonio, Borneo, Nashville, Atlanta (again) and now Kazakhstan. To manage these projects, I've picked up Russian and Indonesian languages with bits and pieces of other languages scattered about to help get through airports and shopping. It's great to be able to travel: Mongolia, Great Wall of China, Red Square, North Africa, Europe, England, Thailand, Bali, Scotland, Singapore etc... but there's a price for this lifestyle. Typical for Expats, I am divorced... to a wonderful lady (met in Alaska) who is raising my 15 year old daughter: Becky, (born in England) named after Becky Thatcher in Tom Sawyer. Becky [in HS] is wonderfully intelligent and beautiful and way too busy for Dad. We enjoy our brief time together by vacationing around the world. Current saving are earmarked for her goals of Fashion Design in Paris. I've raced 38 triathlons, up to Half-Ironman distance. On my list of things to do is to race a full Ironman, cycle across America, cycle some of the mountain stages of the Tour de France, more marathons overseas, etc.... Sports has been a large part of my life. I exercise everyday, sometimes for hours but clean living and being healthy seems to be paying dividends now that I'm (we're) over 40 ! (already ? !!!) It's interesting to read the various directions of Walther Grads. Lots of successes. ***************************************______________________________________ NEW UPDATE ! Feb 2009 Since leaving Kazakhstan(2005), I went back to the US, was hired to be Director of Construction for a large Indian Corporation in South Florida and manage their Capital Growth Projects... this was going on during the Katrina- N.O.'s time frame.... but the company lost the tender and I took their second offer to go to (changing accents now) Spartanburg TN, where I was bestowed with an in-progress project that was only 9 months behind schedule with an EPA (cost damages apply) deadline. We built a reasonably high performing / low-disfunctional crew and finished with enough time to pat each other on the back. Most of the guys talked funny (considering I worked in Mongolia for two years - this is quite a statement) but in spite of the north-west Alabama dialect - I understood most of what they said. Then, like always, I got a call. A telephone interview for a job on St.Croix managing the largest Capital Project for the largest enterprise on St.Croix. I've always heard of expats that get these cool jobs in great locations.... not like the jungles of Borneo or Mongolia - but THE CARRIBEAN !!!. So off I went in 5 days to St. Croix thinking I was going to America's Paradise and going to live life large. Well, large for me was 80+ hours a week, wearing a nomex coveralls and dealing with the most strict regulations since managing the project at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Reactor. But, I did live on a Condo on the cliff looking over Christiansted... played golf every Sunday afternoon - so there was some fun. Did not do the St.Croix half-ironman. But it was one of Corporate Support activties and I was (music please) Aid Station Manager at the last...Expand for more
water station before the finish. First time I volunteered for anything -next time I'll send money and regrets :-) Then, I got a call. Go back to Kazakhstan ... did that, the economy of KZ crashed - but why go back to the USA. I'm half way to Australia. So I went to Perth, stayed with a friend and got a job at Director level for a brand new mine - out in the middle of nowhere, which is pretty much all of Australia. 40 million people, 90% live within 40 Km's of the coast. Australia is great for tourism and golf, but the decision managing process is all about risk identification and risk mitigation, tranfer, avoidance and heaven forbid - acceptance. If there is any possibly of not being able to tranfer risk to someone else, guaranteed there will be 72 more meetings, 36 revisions to the risk register, and a decision up to CEO level as what to do.... and we''re talking about the risk of everyday engineering and construction activities. No, inherent risk doesn't exist (in Aus). Well, (Typ.) got another call. And left Aus for - you guessed it money. About 10 months ago, I started for a Swiss company that has 9 iron ore deposits in Ukraine and is developing the 4th - 6th. It's COO level and I'm pretty happy here- in Ukraine full time.. Big challenges in this economy which is not development friendly. But there are opportunities even in a poor economy. The market bouncing on the bottom but our bottom line is showing signs of improvement. Meetings with the Owner today went very well and looks like I will be able to enjoy the Sea Kayak I just ordered - I live walking distance to the Dnepr River. Sorry so long - I rejoined to see what youse guys have been up to.... I heard the good news about the new Cubs owner ! Go Cubbies. I might be in the small minority - but I do think the Bears could use Michael Vick. It's not like he'll be throwing small dogs for touchdowns..... _______________________________________ May 2010. So, I have perservered in Ukraine for the past 2 years and have 1 year left on my contract. The price of iron ore is going through the roof again, so our growth projects are restarted and I am quite busy. (the problem with these updates is it begs a person to use 1st person, please know it's not a mememememe but kinda sorta it is because of the format). I think I mentioned I bought a paramotor last summer. there are some pictures on ww w.fotki .com/ryuneko . (no spaces) The winter in Ukraine sucked ! All the bushes planted last summer in my garden died. It was the worst winter in 32 years.... I'm glad I had a chance to experience it... But now is beautiful. If you remember from Mr. Wuenche's geography classes, there were 2 things he stressed; "Feign" (maybe a spelling issue) this is a German word for when warm air crosses a mountain top and cools and condenses and turns into a mist that results in fog in the valley. Feign. I still remember echoing his good Feign with my lame-oh feign. Him and Rassmusen had huge positive on my life. I bet you didn't know I used to cut Mr. Young's grass for 2 years during H.S. He was a customer. Never saw him. He'd leave the money on his mower in the garage and I cut away. $7.50 . Then, I'd go and spend 67 cents for a vanilla malt. Got me a "B". But I cut his grass after the "B" with the same quality. Gosh my Russian is good now. It wasn't bad but now I can talk with anyone on nearly any subject. If you haven't been on w ww.lan dandfarm.com (no spaces) LooK ! I am in Ukraine to be able to buy a 100 acres piece of property and retire without seeing any neighbors lights. Enough for now. Later ! .
