Life After graduation, I went to Auburn, but returned to Florence after a year and worked. In 1979, I enrolled at UNA and finished a degree in chemistry in 1982. My initial plans to go into the Navy were altered after one of my professors, Tom Murray (husband of Bradshaw English teacher Sandy Murray) encouraged me to try grad school. I enrolled at Vanderbilt in Fall 1982, graduating with a PhD in 1986. In my last year at Vanderbilt, I began dating a first-year grad student, Patty Moriarty, who I would later marry. After graduation, I took a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Virginia, where I lived until 1989. During my time there, I married Patty and our first child, Katie, was born.
