James's Story

After MHS I attended DBJC and worked part time for Southern Bell. Not too long after that, I was then hired as a full time employee. When the Selective Service changed their method to the lottery system, I was #47 out of 365 on their list so I enlisted in the Coast Guard. After boot camp I was then sent to Yorktown, Va for Engineman School, then on to the north island of Hokkaido, Japan for a year on a LORAN station. Turns out that it was great duty. When I returned to the states, I was then stationed in Cape May, NJ and did Search and Rescue duty for the remainder of my enlistment. I met my wife Nancy while I was in NJ as a blind date. She was on vacation with a friend of hers just before she went home to Pittsburgh, Pa to begin Nursing School. We have been married now for 42 1/2 years and I'm the one to be blessed by it! After my discharge from the Coast Guard, I returned to Southern Bell and was then sent to Pensacola due to the economic downturn at that time. Pensacola was a great town to live in: had many dear friends there and the people I worked for were great. After 8 years there, we then moved to Orlando which turned out to be a mistake, and then back home to the Daytona district in 1991 where I finished my career with Southern Bell/BellSouth/AT&T. I retired at 62 in March of 2012 with 43 years of service. I've always loved to fly as an aviation buff, so I volunteered with an organization called History Flight. We flew a 1943 B-25 and several other aircraft in which we sold flights to the public. The funds then went to help find the remains of our service men at the island of Tarawa. Just after my retirement, we flew the B-25 to Urbana, Ohio for the 70th Doolittle reunion. I had the honor of ...Expand for more
meeting the last 4 survivors of the famous Doolittle raid including Lt. Col. Richard Cole, Doolittle's copilot. It was a trip that I'll always remember. Nancy and I couldn't have any children, so we adopted our daughter Lauren at age 9 days old while we lived in Orlando. We now have a wonderful grandson (Josh) who's 17 months old as of this writing. He's been so much fun to have around! To be a grandparent and watch him grow has been a real blessing. In the 80's Nancy and I got involved in scuba diving and went with her sister and husband as often as we could. My only claim to fame is the 65 pound grouper I got while spear fishing in the Dry Tortugas. Now we're seeing the U.S. with our 5th wheel rv as much as we can. We've always liked to tent camp, but now we do it in comfort! We hike, bike, kayak, fish and swim when we go. Just sitting around and doing nothing doesn't appeal to us, but once in a while, we sit at the fire pit and have a glass of wine or rum 'n coke and just chill. While I haven't had a spectacular lifestyle to talk about I consider myself to be very blessed. God has been too good to me. Nancy and I have had good jobs, good health and a good marriage together. I thank Jesus for who I am today (one of His own) and I thank Him daily for accepting me just the way I am, warts and all. My walk with Him has been a journey of growth rather than a lightning strike as with Saul. I guess God knew that I'm a little slow on the up take!! I consider everyday a blessing from Him to enjoy, and I do my best to live like He wants me to. It's a tall order and I fall short but the effort is worth it. It's my prayer that all of you come to know Him and the awesome love He has for you. Blessings, Jim
