Jim's Story

Life My, my photo looks smug! It was taken at the wedding of my youngest daughter, so I guess some self-satisfaction was in order. The tie shows a school of fish and one swimming in the opposite direction (not shown by the photo). After attending Wilson, Jefferson and Hutton grade schools I attended Lewis and Clark, (Louie Livingston's home room) where I initiated creation of a student-described catalog of electives, was student government representative, and then (to the surprise of some) ASB president. I offered to try to have the ASB teach freshmen to dance and we used several approaches. I also supported a progam of student assemblies among the different high schools and designated "floor leaders" from each class in the council. I understand my successor continued these iniatives. After a wide variety of courses and institutions, but with graduation from college at the expected time, I obtained an MS in Psychology from the U. of W, a Ph.D. from the U of Colorado, taught in NE medical schools, Universities and Colleges 30+ years. Upon retirement, I studied marketing, but retired to obtain a certificate in School Psychology from a program offered jointly by WSU and EWU at Riverpoint. I had experience at each grade-level and in a private high school, retiring when I had a radical prostetectomy. I finished drafts of a book patterned a bit on Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and looked for classmates or others interested in reading and commenting on early drafts of it. They have been most helpful, but I will have at least another round of readers before approaching publishers. What books do you read? I was pleased that, when I introduced it to the last meeting of the nation's narcoleptics, a dozen of them offered to read and comment. One of the book's tasks is to "demystify" narcolepsy and schizophrenia. Both are disorders that often begin in the high school years. They are now apt to go undiagnosed and untreated for decades, causing considerable misery and social cost. I would like to see a college-level psychology course taught to capable high school seniors and maybe juniors in a way that would change this terrible situation and reduce the current epidemic of teen suicide. I think a capable school psychologist, aided by high school student...Expand for more
s who know what such a person does, could do much to make the high school culture more comfortable and productive for all. I have a wife (Nancy) ,2children,2grandchildren,1 great stepgrandson by eldest daughter's recent marriage. She had two children. One is in the military; one is married and works on computer systems. My youngest daughter, Kate, recently married. Both she and her husband, Greg, work with children who have learning and personality difficulties. My eldest, Ann helped start some Montesorri schools in GA, but is now married to an artist, Jim Gill, and living in San Angelo, Texas. I've been married since June 1959 to Nancy, a former teacher and librarian I met at Whitworth where she was a student during my two years there. She isn't keen to attend the LC reunion. She says people just want to talk about LC. Talking with LC people I knew or didn't get to know in high school has led to some very rewarding friendships. I haven't practiced magic for quite a while, but retain some interest in the field that Don Harvey, Elgin Fuller and I used to practice. Professionally, I sort of grew up with the field of sleep disorders and still have something to do with it. (The nation's narcoleptics had me talk at their annual meeting four times.) I'm wondering about the import business. Anyone know anything about it? I'm not a member of the planning committee this year, but can phone in any requests you want forwarded. My phone number is 509-924-6737. You can leave a message anytime. Classmates Inc. won't let me post my email address at America On Line (minardjim). They want you to buy "gold" to communicate that way. You might consider doing so. There are a number of advantages. I hope you will post a bio and participate in the reunion. Incidentally, if you find yourself asked to be in a photo for one of the grade schools I was in, would you please let me know? School I've already written most of this: For grade school, I attended Wilson, Jefferson and Hutton as well as some schools in Kansas, Fullerton CA, and one near Seattle. For college, I attended Yale, Gonzaga, Whitworth, WSU extension, U of W (for an M.S.), U of Colorado (Ph.D.), was a professor for 30 years and, on return to Spokane, WSU/EWU Riverpoint where I trained in school psychology.
