Arlene's Story
Cucamunga Elementary till my parents divorced 1968. Lived with mom - went to Mission in Ontario. Kim Dunnagan was my first friend Even when the other kids were making fun of me. They called me Bongo Lips. Course years later full lips was totally In and I was lucky mine were natural.
Went to DeAnza Jr High.. met Sue Beckner and Diana Diaz. Diana and I were close friends. Still got teased. but not as bad. Read palms for a quarter. Would walk to school with Susie.. close to 2 miles I was living on Park Street and Oakland.
High School. Ontario High for a few years. I didn't belong to any group really. Had a few friends. In a period Ontario had the racial flare ups where occasional lock-downs were called and helicopters loomed above. the friends I had were not from any particular group.. ok some did get high and some were the ones smoking in the girls room. One of my so called friends was not so a friend and we had a fight in front of the school - It was my first physical altercation at school .. only one. The principal told me she always gets in fights and wins... but this one she lost. Forgot her name.. just she had red hair and a freckled face.
It was also a period that I was going to the Ontario library and participating in a few groups in Los Angeles le...Expand for more
aning towards Marxism and participated in a few demonstrations. Mr Carr the driver instructor seen me on the news carrying a sign "Stop Fascist Police Attacks" and gave me a D. Had an underground newspaper for a few months till I got caught.
Had other problems with some of the kids that were threatening. Hated to leave my friends Diana and Kim behind. but I had myself transferred to Chaffey High - Forged my mothers signature and used a friends address that was in the Chaffey district. Did great there. Graduated early - would have been in the summer of 76 but they found one unit short and made me go for another semester - I think it was the firecrackers in the bathroom that got the mysterious unit to appear.
Left Ontario in 1982 to San Fernando Valley worked at the DMV and then Warners (after my second son was born)
then to California Day Fresh till I moved to San Diego in 1999
Now single - living with my two birds (parakeets) working for Charriol in accounting (yawn) but it is in La Jolla a block from the beach with the art galleries around.. who can beat that. Been writing and learning to paint acrylics and I tease my bass and guitar.. partake in reading for the Drunk Poet Society and do drum circles.
