Salvatore's Story
Life
I enlisted in the Navy in January of '76 but did not leave till October. I spent the next 21 years on active duty, visited 25 countries and retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. I have no regrets and if I had to live my life over again I would be part of the United States Navy. I learned so much about life in the Navy, learned how to work under pressure and saw how that could bring out the best in people. We who joined back in the '70s were often the scum of the earth but somehow we managed to play a major role in the downfall of the Soviet Union without starting World War Three. With the fall of Communism, I decided to leave the Navy; I had no idea that 9/11 would happen. I tried to get back in but I guess they needed younger people with different skills.
I left the Navy and got a job in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. It was a good job and I had a nice little house but you never know about life. Things with my wife of 16 years did not work out and we went our separate ways. I needed big change in my life and it happened.
Met the most lovely, caring and adorable woman ever and we started a new life. We did not have much and life was hard for a while; what better way to find out if someone loves you. We struggled, fought and strived together; us against the world. Persistance pays and eventually I got my dream job in Japan.
Still working for the Navy, I was able to get a position that is a GSE 14 level (on the same level as a Commander or LT Colonel). I am actively supporting the Navy in the Global War on Terror and helping to contain the growing threat in North Korea.
We love living in Japan because it gives us an increased opportunity for travel in Asia and because it will provide me with a better life in retirement. I thank God every day for my Wife, kids, job and health and hope that this will be a long ride.
School
I got to Duluth at a hard time in my life; I had just lost my parents and moved from California. I never really had a chance to enjoy Denfeld the way most of my Classmates did but I feel fortunate to have been there. My mother, Julia Puglisi was a Denfeld graduate (Class of '43) and it made me feel good to walk the same hallways and sit in the same classes that she was in back in her day; it made me feel close to her in my loss.
My older Cousin and his wife took my sister Anna and I into their family and were a very devoted family to their church. I never really felt that I fit in during High School and I only dreamed of a way to get out of Duluth. It was not that I hated it, I just wanted to roam the world and explore new and wonderful places.
I guess that the silver lining was that I had nothing to hold ...Expand for more
me down, so I left to join the Navy and see the world...but that's another story!

Military
I graduated from High School one year early because I skipped the fifth grade. I tried to join when I was Senior but I was only sixteen years old and the Recruiter said I had to wait till I was seventeen to join. I was so lucky because I was on Active Duty for the last three days of the Vietnam Era and got the Vietnam GI Bill! My first tour was on an Aircraft Carrier homeported in Florida...it was very miserable living on the ship. The bright side was four tours of Europe, North Africa and the Mideast. I had achieved my goal of getting money for college and was newly married when I finished my first enlistment. Just when I was going to get out, the Navy offered me a $16000 bonus and shore duty in Hawaii! I stayed for another tour.
My shore duty ended (along with my first marriage)and I went to a Fast Frigate in Pearl Harbor and it was a miserable ship. We did go to the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia and Australia and I was promoted to Chief Petty Officer. I was still toying with the idea of leaving the Navy when they offered me a $20000 bonus and sea duty in the Philippines!
I moved to the Philippines and began some of the happiest years of my life. I was fabulously wealthy there and enjoyed a life style of limitless choices. I spent time all over Asia, Australia and the Mideast and had the time of my life. (We could get a beer for about a nickle!) I picked up Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8) as soon as I was eligible. All good things must come to end and I left for Recruiting Duty in Oregon.
Portland was fantastic and I liked it so much that I stayed there for four years. As time went by, I felt the call of the islands and warm seas calling me. I called the Navy and asked if I could go back to Hawaii and they gave me a brand new, top of the line Cruiser out of Pearl Harbor. We went all around the world, Christmas in Hong Kong...New Years in Singapore. We got to the Gulf in time to be some of the last guys to get the Southwest Asia Medal for the Gulf War and then we ended up in SOMALIA to evacuate the UN forces from Mogadishu. We got through that but ended up in Egypt and Saudi Arabia with our mail going to some other part of the region!
Unfortunately, the Navy changed and did away with many of the time-honored traditions and became ultra politically correct. I was considered for promotion to Master Chief Petty Officer FIVE times but was never selected! I could not fit in the mold of the new Navy and decided to call it quits. In February of 1997 I retired from Active Duty and began a whole new chapter in my life...
