Jo's Story

Life Hello to my old friends and sorry to the ones that I was awful towards. As some of you know I was married in school. I was the only pregnant one waddling through the hallways. Well, after two years and two children that didn't work and in 1981 I met and Married a dentist in Chico, which is where I still live. He was a widower with two children, so at age 20 I was in charge of four kids between the ages of one and nine ( what was I thinking?). Well, six years and one more son later I threw in the towel and decided enough. I am now married to my third husband who gives real meaning to " The third time is a charm". He is the most senstive person, and with my being a bit aggressive I have had to learn to be a bit nicer so I wouldn't hurt his feelings. We celebrated our 14th anniversary in May and are planning a two week trip to hawiia this Dec. The area where I grew up is now occupied by the Win-River indian casino. I don't mind though, because I am a member of the tribe and it has increased our income to where we can do a lot more of what we'd like to. I served on the tribal council as secretary for a couple of years, which was interesting. I was working at Chico State University in the Facilities Management Dept. I had worked there for nine years. I am presently working in Redding at the Tribal Administration building as the Education Director. The finances could use an overhaul so that has been my 24/7 goal. The job is stimulating, but the hour commute sucks, oh well. I have three sons. Ages 24, 23 and 18. My oldest lives in L.A and my other two are here in Chico also. The eighteen year old is moving out on his own this week and...Expand for more
for the first time since I was 18 I will have a quiet house. I'm looking forward to it ( I think). I started playing city league softball at age 20 and played for 19 years until I messed up my knee sliding into home. I figured, after a 5 hour surgery, thats enough I need to save my knee for other things. I still played one more year, made MVP at a well known tournament and decided that was a good way to retire from softball. My husband and I spend a couple of week-ends per year going back packing or hanging out at the coast. We have discovered San Diego and really like it there. We spent a week there in April and had a great time. We also are involved in league bowling, and I'm involved at the moment in planning a fund raiser for a co-worker who needs our help. If any of you remember I was the chick who rode the best motorcycle at school ( the cool red 400) and I still ride. I taught my husband to ride while I was on the back giving instructions, not a good idea. I started attending a community college for enrichment and accidently got a degree in Libral Arts and one in Social and Behavioral sciences. I attended our twentieth and had a great time seeing all the familiar faces. I hope we all get together for a twenty fifth, but hey, let's not have the dinner at the senior citizens hall, we're not ready for that yet! (ha-ha). I hope those of you that I was friends with during high school are doing well and have had created lots of wonderful memories since school. Guess what folks? we are middle aged!!! Always, JoAnna Benner
