Joann's Story
Life is Good ! Married to my best friend, a great guy I met in the "romantic" setting of an organic chemistry class at FTU in Orlando (now UCF).. Went on to Univ of FL to finish Pharmacy school, then husband completed PhD in Entomology. (Drugs & Bugs . . . GO GATORS !) He took an academic position with Univ of KY at a rural Research & Educ Center. KY is a beautiful state and for a FL girl to be so landlocked, we were only 10 min from 2 of the nation's largest inland bodies of water, Lake Barkley & KY Lake. Our family enjoyed many happy days on those lakes.
Our girls were born & raised in small town Western KY (except for one year we all spent in England on an academic sabbatical . . . girls went to school there . . . & we travelled extensively thru the British Isles and Europe (independently a la Rick Steves' "Back Door"). As they started school in KY, I became an education and arts advocate. The experiences I had in school and growing up in WP made me want to provide such enrichment opportunities for my girls and their schools. I received an Outstanding KY School Volunteer Award from the state for bringing arts, artists, and educational "extras" in programs to our schools, and remain a Life Member of a nationally recognized statewide advocacy group, the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence.
Those efforts, plus my working ...Expand for more
mostly part-time, were apparently worthwhile. Our girls are college grads (U KY, they bleed blue) and gainfully employed (YES !). Oldest is a Clinical Dietitian/Nutrition Support Specialist in organ transplant at University of Colorado Hospital. She moved to Denver (& discovered snow skiing) from a position with Mayo Clinic JAX, & is married with 2 kiddos. Younger daughter, a Mechanical & Systems Engineer, is a Flight Director with NASA-Houston for the Int'l Space Station, married with 1 child, 3 step children, and 4 step-grands.
Professionally, I was a pharmacist in a variety of retail and hospital settings in FL & KY (started w/Eckerds in FL), now retired after 40 years at it. Husband retired after 35 years with the University of KY. We've moved to Denver near oldest daughter's family and visit the other in TX when we can. We continue our travels whenever possible (got a Bucket List with a few more states, the wild west, and maybe some more countries to explore).
Interesting side story . . . in my early years in KY, I was working a retail pharmacy when a family came in for crutches for their daughter. They signed in the log from Winter Park, FL. Of course I had to inquire what brought them to W KY, and the response was, "The lakes in WP and ORL are too crowded and we love to ski, so we come to W KY for family vacations."
