Joanne's Story
I live in sunny San Diego, am retired and trying to play and have fun. I used to play bridge until I made life master. Currently I cook from my organic garden, read a lot, paint water colors, design jewelry and using the computer more. :)
Earlier Life
After a year at the University of Southern Mississippi, I attended the University of Miami and earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Philosophy, followed by a M.S. in Mathematics--actually an ABD (all but the disertation- which is a long story).
I was a member of the founding faculty at Florida International University in 1972, where I taught for several years. I reallly miss it. Miami was great too.
I moved to San Diego California to marry Carl Gibson, an oceanographer at Scripps Inst. of Oceanology and Prof. of Engineering at UCSD. Now, he's working on Cosmology, and it is different from Cosmatology.
I spent several years working towards Phd in Economics at UCSD didn't finish.
Then I was corporate economist for Copley Press and wrote several books on the San Diego economy. I also started buying San Diego real estate and fixing them up to sell or trade. Still have two which is one too many.
Another fun job was working on the autobiography of the then Director of Scripps. Course, that won't see the light of day for another ...Expand for more
ten years.
Working for SAIC ( Science Applications International) was fun. Could have done less traveling though. I was some kind of trouble-shooter/ jack-of all-trades to CEO R. Beyster. Sort of consequtively, I became Director of Research for Dr. Beyster's Foundation for Enterprise Development.
In the course of putting on a conference in Moscow on employee ownership I met Mikhail Gorbachev who invited me to come work with him.
Of course, the coup happened--I was there at the time. Subsequently, I lived in Moscow for 3 years-helping write laws for the change to capitalism. the Russian government paid me in bags full of tiny ruble notes. I wrote a book on starting business partnerships in Russia. I started many businesses including one of the first computer companies, a publishing company, an amber mine in Kaleningrad and a knit ware cooperative in Riga, Lativia.
I was kidnapped by the Russian mafia in St, Petersburg by a couple of big thugs who threw me into a car. But, I eventually took the guy's gun away (didn't kill them). Lucky, I became comfortable with all sorts of guns thanks to rifle range at U.S.M.
Returning to San Diego, I had a gallery of Russian art for a while. And finally retired early in general trying to live the good life and live happily ever after..
