Joanne's Story
How time flies! The 40th reunion should be in 2009 and I will be attending to see all my old friends. I have been in Jacksonville, Florida since 1982 when I moved from Boston and love it here. It is a secret paradise. Of course we have the weather but there is also theatre, music, arts, the beaches, good restaurants, and more. Of course it was true culture shock after living in Boston for 6 years to move to a place that had no civilization. But now Jax has grown to be a great place to live and eventually retire. It is funny how our different paths have taken us down roads we would not have thought of going down. But I am happy with my life and its many adventures. Of course there have been challenges and sadness to overcome but that is just the ebb and flow of life. I have been a realtor for 15 years now and have been successful enough to be able to ride out these troubled times comfortably. I have been a caregiver twice now for my family. I was my brother Robert's caregiver as he was fighting his battle with leukemia in 1999 which he lost 6 weeks ...Expand for more
later. I am now caring for my 90 year old mother in my home after her heart attack in March 08. But that is a job I take great pride in because I am helping to extend her life. I have also experienced the heartbreak of ending my 20 year relationship with the love of my life in 2000. It was sad to have to acknowledge to myself that we had both changed but not at the same pace. It was best at that time to move on with our lives. We are still friends and I am happy for that. It was after those trying times that I thru myself into volunteer work to stay busy. Hospice is my favorite charity since they helped me with my brother. In my pictures, you can see my poodle Gigi who does pet therapy work with me at the local hospice. There is nothing better than making someone smile and laugh when they really need it. In fact, I was named Humanitarin of the Year for the Northeast Florida Board of Realtors for 2004. It was one of my greatest honors. I look forward to catching up with all my old high school friends and hope to see everyone at the 40th reunion!
