Joanne's Story

My name is Joanne Amanda Ricks and I am single with no children. I live in Harlem, NY. I graduated from Sacred Heart of Mary HS and attended Hunter College where I obtained my BA degree in Communications Media with a concentration in Journalism. My original Major was supposed to be Nursing but after working for Bronx Lebanon Hospital for the last six months of HS I realized that nursing was not for me. I was Valedictorian of the 1978 class and I was asked to write a speech and address what was the last class graduating form Sacred Heart of Mary HS. I realized that I had a talent for writing and public speaking. I worked in the television and radio industry for nearly three years. Channel 9 relocated d to NJ and I did not like the commute. I did some temp work for a while and worked for a bank as a Human Resources Assistant for two years. Currently I am employed by the City of New York and have been working as a Facilities Manager for the Department of Cultural Affairs for 15 years. Prior to that I worked for the Department of Records and Information Services for 3 years. My life has changed dramatically. I always wanted to be a Nurse when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. My favorite way to relax is a warm bubble bath with soft jazz and some scented candles. I love watching baseball and Reality TV. I am obsessed with Project Runway,America's Next Top Model and Top Chef. My biggest surprise in life is that I am still unmarried and have no children. I would love to see Sister Mary Alice Williams from Our Lady of Lourdes because she was warm, pleasant and was such a cool teacher. I would like to he in Hawaii on the beach watching the waves and relaxing with Mr. Right whomever God has chosen for me. My current age is 48. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be old, tired and gray. I was so completely surprised. I am none of the above. My original career aspiration was to be a Registered Nurse. After doing an internship in my last year of high school I realized it was not the career for me. When I went to college I wa...Expand for more
nted to be a News Reporter for a local tv station. When I did some research and interviewed a reporter named Chee Chee Williams from Channel 7 for a journalism project, I realized that I would have to leave NY and my family to be successful in a smaller market. I did not want to relocate because I was dating someone serious at the time and was afraid I would lose him. As it turned out we got engaged, dated 13 years, broke up anyway and never got married after all. My best friend would tell you I am warm, funny, friendly and really nice. On a serious note she would also tell you that I enjoy helping people and have a caring spirit. She would also tell you that I am very sensitive and sometimes extremely opinionated. For people who do not know me very well they would probably describe me as conceited. I am just confident and secure in who she is as a person. If that makes me conceited than so be it. One thing I enjoy in life is working with children. Every Saturday afternoon while school is in session from September -June I tutor children in my church. If I had the chance to change my career path I would probably go back to school to get a BA and Masters degree in Education. I have two great friends. One is Sharon Kerr from Kindergarten and Our Lady of Lourdes. The other is Kim Lowe whom I met at Hunter College in 1979. Both of these women I have known for many years. Our personalities just clicked upon meeting each other and I know I can count on either one of them in good times or bad. Both have been there for me during some difficult times in my life. They are like family and I am blessed to have remained friends with them for so long. They are simply two awesome ladies and my dearest friends. The fact that I still look the same and that I still have that same bubbly personality is what would surprise my friends at a high school reunion. My first job was as a Summer Youth at Labor Sherman Day Care Center in the Bronx. I got paid a little money to be a receptionist. What I remembered most about it was that I enjoyed talking to people. I know that my calling in life is to communicate with people.
