Joanne's Story

June 26, 2013 Hello again, after another few years! Posted my latest picture. Since my last post, I have had some fabulous moments, and some of the worst moments of my life. Just as all of you , or many have had to travel on this journey of life. I am alone now, as my dear husband, Oliver, died from astrocytoma (brain tumor) in 2010, and in January, Suzette Mitchell, my best friend since I was FIVE years old, died from multiple myeloma.....a cancer in the bone marrow. I have struggled with the loss of Oliver who helped me through life and raising the children...........then, as I was coming out of the heavy grief for Oliver, Suzette was diagnosed, and went through her illness and death. She had been with me all the roller coaster rides since I can remember. So, those of you who are still walking, limping, wheelchair bound, or some who are jumping......remember, we are at a stage where every moment is a gift, and DO IT NOW has never been more important. A little advice from an old, and I DO MEAN OLD, friend. I will be 67 in October....which just does not seem right. Checked my math, and it is true. smile My two sons are married and have children. My latest is a little girl named Lauren, who just turned one. Blonde, blue eyes and a spitfire..........yes, I know those who know me know that is NO surprise. I can not tell you how gray my hair is, because, I color it, and frankly, I am not that interested in having an exact count of how many I 'own'. At some point, I will have to stop coloring it or I will look like 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?". I am not thin, as I said in the last post, and have made little to no progress in getting there. Of course, my effort to reach a weight loss goal is non-existent........so, if I do nothing, I get nothing. I know, brilliant. From Panther to Elephant.....gee, that is ok. cause, I am still a wild animal. Ha. Recently contacted Pamela Leist, another very good friend, and she is as beautiful as she ever was, and very active with her business/s.......always doing something entertaining, and worldly. I do not teach anymore, but, still do a little research with some colleagues. I am flat not interested in doing anything I do not want to do. Now I know why old people seemed so bull-headed when I was a kid. I have morphed into one. My sister and I visit my lake home and have fun doing nothing. We do eat, sleep, talk, and enjoy the scenery. I have a 1/2 acre on Woodley Road, which I cut and do the flower & vegetable gardens.....so, not too bad for me. I broke a leg and a wrist last year doing stupid things. I do not have osteoporosis , however , I torqued my leg and fell on it and I heard it break. I will never forget that sound the rest of my life. Sickening. Sound was worse than the pain. My son, Scott, keeps threatening...Expand for more
me with getting out the 'brochures' on elder living. Lost both garage door openers, so have to Home Depot and buy two more. Shhhhh, do NOT tell my children. They will just add that to the list of things mom does dumb. I used to tell them everything, but, me thinks it is better to just keep my mouth SHUT. Not an easy task for me. If you don't hear from me again, I am dead. But, that is ok......have had a grand life thus far......and I really do hope to see you all at the next year's reunion. smile If any of you want to get in touch with me. Would love to hear from you. Most sincerely, Joanne Life Hello Everyone! Well, since I turned 60 last year, and am fast approaching 61.........I figure that there is no better time than to post something about my life since highschool! I am happily married, have two grown, married sons! 3 grandchildren and counting. Suzette Mitchell is STILL my best friend, and we are always in contact with each other. I ride horses once in a while. I am a teacher/prof........with a varied teaching experience from university to 3rd grade, in house drug rehab, and on and on! Love all of it. I have three dog 'children', as I am an animal person, and have been all of my life. My husband is retired from Xerox, and we have a little country church to which he is the pastor. We minister to an older (even older than us!) congregation, and feel blessed to have many grandmothers and grandfathers there. My mother and father died many years ago, so, I have been an orphan for over 15 years. I know many friends that have their parents to this day! BOTH parents. I love to garden and go to our lake home in Indiana. We are not leaving Toledo for parts unknown to retire. We divide our time between our Toledo home, and our lake house.......traveling and visiting other parts of the earth. Next trip is to Ireland. I often think of you all, and the fun we had in high school and the embarrassing times, too. Suzette and I were on the reunion committee for one of the reunions.......then, we went AWOL, and went to a horse show. Bad bad girls. BUT, we are definitely going to be there for the next one. I am still short, what I consider FAT....since, I was anorexic in high school, and am trying to let my hair grow to it's natural color, which I suspect is pretty gray. We shall see. I will try as long as I can stand it. Life has been good, in the main, with the usual heartaches and the usual pitfalls; but, I have no complaints. Have I lived a perfect life? NOOOOOOOOOOo. I have made many mistakes, and made some great decisions. Just wanted anyone who is reading this to know that I thank you for being in my early life, and I pray you are all doing well, and enjoying the mature (are any of us mature yet?) years in the bestest of ways. With Much Warmth, Jo
