Joe's Story
Has it been 33 years since graduating from NWC? Not possible. 50 years-old? I don't feel a day over 49;)
As the man once said (er, sang) "what a long, strange trip it's been." I guess I turned out to be somewhat of a late bloomer. Following a rather unsettled period after high school, I eventually got serious about life (well, at least most things in life) and have achieved some measures of success and happiness. I've been married to my wife Mari for 25 years, and have been blessed with two children. My daughter Mia will turn 21 next week (God, does that make me feel old) and my son Joey will be 16 in April. Our yellow lab (Luke) is essentially our third child, and the love of everyone's life. A great dog. On the professional front, I have been with Chubb Insurance Group for the last 10 years, and am currently a vice president. I am responsible for the strategic planning, budgeting, analysis, and financial reporting for a division with $ 3B in revenue, $ 100M in controllable expenses, and about 1,000 employees. Never thought I would have this level of success in "Corporate America," but...Expand for more
stranger things have happened. I thoroughly enjoy my work, but do spend a fair amount of time away from home. I had the pleasure (mostly ;)of serving on the West Hartford Board of Education for two terms, and as chairman of that board for 2 of the 7 years. In some ways, I think I learned more during that period than I have in any other 7-year period of my life. Politics in West Hartford was and remains a full contact sport, but I enjoyed every minute of it. While it's been more than 30 years since graduating from NWC, I can practically see the school from my front lawn (I've owned a home on North Main Street for almost 20 years.) Now that I think about it, I've basically lived my entire life within a 5-mile radius. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. In retrospect, our high school years were among the best years of our lives. I've had the good fortune of having some life-long friendships that began at NWC, and regularly bump into many other former classmates and old friends around town and elsewhere. I would be happy to hear from more of my old friends. Best to all - Joe D.
