Joe's Story

Life Wow, apparently people are reading this. Who knew? I've not even been aware of this site since the reunion 3 years ago... LOL! Does this surprise anyone? Well, what's new?? Ummm, still teaching Spanish (2nd Year and 3rd Year/UW 103) and A.P. Psychology at Gig Harbor H.S. This will be my 8th year at the time of this writing. I'm about halfway through my 2nd Masters Degree, this one in Counseling Psychology through Argosy U. in Seattle. I'll do a year-long internship next year. I'm finally moving out of Tacoma after 11 years this month - mainly to avoid the bridge tolls... also because, honestly, I'm getting too old for the big city I think. LOL! Too much noise, traffic, and whatnot. There comes a time when one must vacate the place that was once crowned "America's Most Stressful City". I need to be on the water where it's quiet... a nice beach home back in Mason County until I can save up enough money to purchase my first "big boy" house - maybe by the time I'm 40?? Who knows? Wow, 3086 characters left. I actually know what that means now, I've become so techno-savvy since the first time I discovered this website. I text (slowly), have an i-pod (that I know how to use with the careful guidance of "I-pods for Dummies"), and have a laptop for which I spent 5 days at Circuit City with kids half my age trying desperately to get everything "back to normal again" after it crashed a few times. But it's a start and I've somewhat impressed students of the millenium. Don't worry, I'm still at least 90% Gen X. Oh screw it, 100%! ;) 2525 characters.... how nice of this to keep track! I guess the last interesting thing is we're all going to Croatia this next summer (2008). Yep, all 10 immediate family members including young niece Rachel (now 3) and nephew Ben (now 1.5) - hmmm, 489 hours in a plane with toddlers. Uncle Joey will need his happy pills for this one! Seriously, we're all very much looking forward to this trip we've been planning to take for years now as my Mom and her sister were born there and we still have family there. OK, I've either bored or entertained the 118 people who have looked at my profile. Thanks for looking. Is this what a blog is like? When I first heard of it I thought it was a dance. SHS classmates... if you want to do a 15-year reunion, you know what to do! Plan it yourselves!! :) School I'm not really sure what goes here.... I guess a list of my schooling experience for those so inclined to read it. 3880 characters - WOO-HOO!!! Here we go! Grab a cup of coffee at your version of Central Perk and have a read: 1.) 1980-81: Co-Op Preschool in Belfair, WA. I don't see this group anywhere at ALL on Classmates.com. Dammit. I just found out that my former teacher (please, on behalf of teachers everywhere, don't EVER say "old teacher" - the preferred vernacular is "former"...), Mrs. Logan is still teaching there! AND, my niece and nephew can start taking classes there in the fall if it works into my sister's schedule! I'm so excited about this possibility!!!...Expand for more
! 2.) 1981-1987: Pioneer Elementary School in Shelton, WA. Anyone else here a Pioneer Survivor?? Oy, did we EVER go through at least a decade's worth of therapy at that place! And all my students think the 80's were "so cool"... umm, note to you - NO! Just, no. 3.) 1987-1990: Pioneer Middle School (P.M.S.) - we took our act on the road... basically down the sidewalk, through the playground and incessant gravel, around the "trench of tires", and into the courtyard. Remember when we had that complete overhaul of teachers in 8th grade?? Again, oy. 4.) 1990-1994: Shelton High School in Matlock, WA. Kidding. I have all these characters and I want to see who's awake. Coffee refill? Any-hoo. Basically me going from awkward wallflower literally hiding in the library to nonstop energy nazi in 0-80 during the 4 years... good times! 5.) 1994-1996: South Puget Sound Comm. College in Olympia, WA. I actually did a brief, blink-and-you-missed-it tenure at WWU in the fall of 1994, but realized it was a little too overwhelming for this small-town bumpkin to be too far away after I'd just turned 18. Long story. Back to SPSCC. Not much to report here except thank GOD and all that is Holy that I didn't have to have an actual Assoc. degree to transfer to U.P.S. I could easily still be there trying to pass the math requirement. Got enough credits down at a MUCH cheaper price and started my fascination for psych and soc down there. 6.) 1996-1999: University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. Absolutely the best fit for me, despite the fact that I had to add on an "extra" Senior year with the fact that they have "units" instead of credits. Another long story. Found some of the best friends I've ever had over there and really loved every bit of my experience being a Logger. Majored in History (which I don't use) and minored in Spanish. 7.) 1999-2000: U.P.S. School of Education, Master of Arts in Teaching Program. OMG, the most INTENSE 3 semesters God ever put on this planet!!! At the height, I was interning at Wilson H.S. for the first 3 periods of the day, scarfing a lunch down, and running back to UPS for anywhere from 4-6 hours of classes. And I had a part-time campus job still! My Masters Thesis, entitled "Pedro and Maria On the Run: An Investigative Look at Critical Pedagogy in the Foreign Language Classroom" was presented in August - 2 months after I accepted my current job at G.H.H.S. 8.) 2006-present: Argosy University in Seattle, WA. Time for a back-up! This masters degree will afford me more opportunities down the road if I get too exhausted with high-school teaching. I'll be able to teach Psych in comm. colleges, work toward licensure in private practice, work as a mental health consultant, etc. The program should be completed in the spring of 2009. Whew!!! Any coffee left for me? All this writing has exhausted me! Thank Heaven for the I-Pod Playlist... :) I'd love to hear about you folks as well! -Joe P.S. 295 characters remaining... they must know that writing is one of my "strengths", LOL!!
