Joe's Story

Life I have lived a full and busy life. Being raised in Connecticut from the late 50's through mid 70's I experienced many changes in my way of life, culture and urban development. It has always interested me how the values of society, our needs and wants change over time. I think back as a child when we ate out once a week usually at McDonalds when Mom drove into town to buy groceries, I liked those fish fillet sandwiches! In those days most businesses where not open on Sunday and we usually had dinner at my grandparents after church or at home. Families seemed closer then and many people I knew did not travel much and life was centered around family and work. We had some great places to hang out as kids the "big rock", the "gold fish pond", as well as acres of woods to run and ride our bikes , lots of fishing, as well as summer camp kept me busy. Through high school I worked partime at my Dad's grocery store. The time and experiences there shaped my way of understanding business and has helped me in many ways create success in my own business. Life changed for me as I attended College in the Midwest and the pace of life seemed to move a lot faster. I married in 1980 just prior to starting dental school, we had our first child my second year of dental school and our second just after I graduated in 1984. I purchased a dental practice in Menasha Wisconsin after graduation and passing licensing boards. The past 24 years since graduation have gone by quickly, we also had two more children 1986, and 1989. Cynthia and I just celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary!!! My Wife is from Council Bluffs, Iowa and her midwestern values have created stability and a wonderful family life. The responsibilities of raising a family, building a business, and staying current with the vast knowledge base of dentistry has kept me very busy. I have been blessed with a wonderful supportive family and a thriving business. The challenges of life have helped me keep every aspect of my life in perspective. When I consider the good health, family and business success I have obtained the challenges I have faced seem small and helped me mature in various aspects of my life. In an information age where almost anything we need to learn can be found in a few mouse clicks, in an age of continual scientific discovery every day is an adventure. I try to approach life from this viewpoint and always want to learn new concepts, skills, as well as retain the knowledge base I achieved through education and life experience. I also hope that I can make life better for others around me by my actions and deeds. It is my hope that mankind will put all his energies into the betterment of life rather than the destruction and suppression of others. There is so much to live for and so much at stake for mankind in the next few decades. For those who know me and have read this thanks for being a part of my life. Please email me and let me know about your life's journey. Sincerely, Joe Ferraro School I spent a great amount of ti...Expand for more
me in school, 10 years of college after high school obtaining a doctor of dental surgery degree from Marquette University in 1984. My undergraduate degree was a B.A. from Taylor University 1978 in Biology. I attended Creighton University for two years and continued my studies with several graduate science courses as well as business economics and accounting. In 1980 I attended Marquette University School of Dentistry and in 1984 I received my dental degree. School never stops as I attend frequent continuing education courses, I would become bored quick unless I was learning something new or enhancing learned skills. I have met many people along the way, thankyou to those who spent late nights studying with me to do well on college exams, your help and encouragement allowed me to succeed. As technology has advanced computers, electron microscopes and a new vast sea of knowledge gives me the desire to go through college all over again. I know it may sound crazy, but I was and still am in awe of the study of the human body, physiology and the biochemical complexity that occurs. Science is on the frontier of many new medical discoveries that in a short period of time will revolutionize the treatment of many diseases and improve the quality of life for many. This is why I desired to become a health provider and we live in exciting times of change and discovery. How things have changed! When I took biostatistics the professor would not allow us to use calculators for the exam we had to use logrithim tables instead to perform mathematical calculations. In high school chemistry Mr. Hyatt taught us how to use a slide ruler. When was the last time you saw one of those in a store!! In undergraduate school we fed ticker tape and punched index cards with lines of program code to write a computer program into a feed which the computer read. There were no word processors or Windows or DOS only a electric typerwriter at least it was electric. Well at least all the good times seem to stand out more, I don't think about the nights I pondered if I would finish college and reach my goals, the 18 hour days of study and those occasional all nighters. When I look back there is a great deal of gratitude I had the opportunity to attend excellent schools. Workplace I own and operate Apple Valley Dental Center. The past twenty four years since I started practice have passed quickly. I am excited to be in a profession that demands excellence, continual improvement and learning of technical skills, proficiency and staying current with a large volume of dental related literature. I hope to be able to practice well into my twilight years and be able to share my clinical expertise with other colleagues. Dentistry has been a very fullfilling career for me and best suits my abilities as well as the challenges of owning a business. I consider myself very fortunate and am thankful each day to perform my chosen profession. I practice as a general dentist and currently have a staff of seven wonderful individuals.
