Joe's Story

After graduating from Aviation, I attended Los Angeles Harbor College because they offered an AA degree in Printing Technology; I had taken printing classes from Carl Green all four years at AHS. (I was accepted to Cal Poly SLO but lacked the funds to attend there). While attending Harbor, I met Jacqueline, who has been my wife of 50 years as of June 2018. I received my AA degree and transferred to CSU Los Angeles where I received my BA in Printing Management in 1968. I went to work for a large printing firm, Arcata Graphics, immediately after graduation. I was a customer service representative for Newsweek Magazine and Automobile Club publications. As the Vietnam War escalated, and my college deferment expired, I was able to join a Psychological Operations Army Reserve unit in San Pedro due to my printing background. A friend told me about an opening for a printing instructor at Redondo Union High School, so I applied and got the position. I started in 1972 and taught Graphic Arts and Printing Occupations for 30 years. When Aviation closed in 1982, the teachers were split between Mira Costa and Redondo. I ended up being colleagues with some of the teachers we had at Aviation, including Mark Arwine, Hal Rhine, Jim Walker, Tom Lemley, Duncan Parker, Ken Wilson and Larry Boyd. I retired early in 2002; I then started a handyman business that I had for 10 years. I “fully ret...Expand for more
ired” in 2012, although I am the primary maintenance person at our church, so I keep pretty busy with that. We have one daughter, Erika, who was born in 1975. She is a Speech Pathologist at an elementary school in Oxnard; she is married to a firefighter who also teaches EMT classes at Ventura College. We have a granddaughter, Ashley, who is eight going on 18. She already is planning to be a pediatrician! After playing tennis at Aviation, I continued the sport until lower back issues forced me to give it up. (We now play pickle ball doubles once a week or so, which is a little easier on the ol’ body.) While I was teaching, I would take some of my advanced students water-skiing down at Golden Avenue in Long Beach. We also would rent houseboats in the summer with friends and water-ski on the Sacramento Delta. I have ridden motorcycles off-road for years, and continue to do so in spite of two knee replacements. We have a group of five or six in our “Over the Hill Gang” who ride three or four times a year either up in Big Bear or out in the desert. Although we have never been on an ocean cruise, we enjoy “land” cruising in our motorhome. Starting in the late 1970’s, our goal was to see all the states. As of 2016, we had toured all 50 states; with the exception of Hawaii, all have been by RV. I am looking forward to touching bases with fellow Aviation alumni via Classmates.
