Life UPDATES. First marriage ended sadly enough but amicably in divorce; second marriage to my longtime Thai partner "Aew" in 2021. Moved from Hong Kong after 10 years there working with The New York Times as an editor to the house we built in Thailand in July 2023. I'm now officially "retired" but still do a bit of freelance editing. Those two sons mentioned below are now 40 and as of March 2024, 36. I should add one soccer World Cup (2010 in South Africa) and one Rugby World Cup (2019 in Japan) to big sporting events I've covered though my journalism career was focused more on international events than on sports. Still cycling a lot — pretty much daily — and occasionally will do longer rides, up to 50 miles in a day. Not much more to add to this update, which does overtake some of what is below, which I will not be deleting! Married since '79 to Louise with two sons; one left U of Minn after a year to try punk rock, other is Akin, a soph at Rollins College. As of spring '10 they will be 26 and 22, respectively.
