Life
UPDATES. First marriage ended sadly enough but amicably in divorce; second marriage to my longtime Thai partner "Aew" in 2021. Moved from Hong Kong after 10 years there working with The New York Times as an editor to the house we built in Thailand in July 2023. I'm now officially "retired" but still do a bit of freelance editing. Those two sons mentioned below are now 40 and as of March 2024, 36. I should add one soccer World Cup (2010 in South Africa) and one Rugby World Cup (2019 in Japan) to big sporting events I've covered though my journalism career was focused more on international events than on sports. Still cycling a lot — pretty much daily — and occasionally will do longer rides, up to 50 miles in a day. Not much more to add to this update, which does overtake some of what is below, which I will not be deleting!
Married since '79 to Louise with two sons; one left U of Minn after a year to try punk rock, other is Akin, a soph at Rollins College. As of spring '10 they will be 26 and 22, respectively.

ma mater of Bears late great Willie Galimore. I spent early career as editor w/Washington Post and Detroit Free Press. Almost as good as Tech Times.
Still active at 60 - cycling, playing hockey (when we can get ice in Fla.), being soccer ref. See LiveSTRONG Challenge site and search my Austin participant name - and help me fight cancer. I recently completed my fourth LiveSTRONG ride in Texas. Please check out the site!
Speaking of soccer, it's been a major part of my life, and three Techmen helped push my interest there: Radomir (Ray) Grbic, classmate Roberto and his brother Ricardo Armendariz. (Thanks, guys.) Played three years college, once worked at a German soccer mag and have covered parts (or all) of 3 World Cups: 1974 in Germany, 1982 in Spain, and 1994 here in the States.
I now go to Paris or Hong Kong most summers to edit at Intl Herald Tribune, sometimes back to Wash. Post. Mr. Sarsfield would be glad to know I still speak German; also learned Dutch and dabble in French because of those Paris summers. Cantonese will have to wait, though!
