Joe's Story
After barely graduating at Johnson, I tried City College for a year, flunked out, then joined the Navy in 1966 with Bob Burfield (Class '65) and loved it; stayed for 20 years. Attended UU in electrical engineering, then CAL Berkeley in civil and then CU on the GI Bill for an MBA. Traveled 30+ countries in the Navy and moved to Boulder,CO in 1986 when I retired from the Navy with my last tour as the Staff Engineer (Navy SEABEES) on the CINCPACFLT Staff in Pearl. I was enlisted for 8 years and then got a Navy Commission as a "Mustang" Ensign. Spent a year in flight school then went aboard ship for four years. Obtained licenses as a Master Electrician, Master Plumber, General Contractor while in the SEABEES and then Class B Mechanical Contractor and eventually a Professional Engineer (Colorado PE) in 1990. Spent the summers of 1983 and 1985 in Egypt on a Navy Operation as the Staff Engineer on the Rapid Deployment Forces, and could see the light show from my tent west of Cairo on the pyramids and spinx every night prior to taps.
Tragically, my wife, Jeanne of 48 years, was overcome by a deadly and incurable form of internal cancer called chilangiosarcoma (CCA) and passed in April 2015 in my arms, in her own bed with our three sons and daughter-in-laws at her bedside. She had three weeks to live after five operations to help prolong her life. No one who gets this form of cancer lives past 6 months.
Jeanne and I got married at 20 in 1968 and we have 3 sons: Joe,Jr., Daren and Justin...and 9 grandchildren. We started Roberts & Sons in 1977 and our property mgmt and sales business in '92, called Roberts and Sons, LLC in...Expand for more
Boulder, CO. I'm still the Office Broker and do Boulder City Inspections three days a week to keep busy. Entire family is involved in real estate and property management from 10-100%. Joe Jr plus a daughter-in-law Lisa, and my sister Cee (Johnson '68), manage 240 homes in the Boulder County area. I've done 27 "flips" since 1970...not the kind you see on "Flip This House"...real life ones. I don't plan to fully retire, but SS at 66 was nice. I ski a few "blue" runs each winter and go to a cabin in the mountains (Dillon, CO) near Keystone and Copper Mountain on several weekends throughout the year and four weeks on the "Starchaser" houseboat every August at Lake Powell.
In 2014 I completed an 11 year project of a complete rebuilt, every nut and bolt removed, of a '53 chevy 5-window pickup in my garage....added a 3rd bay just for the truck. It was Jeanne's Great Uncle Joe's truck in the 50-60's and I rebuilt it for Jeanne. It's candy-apple red and almost all original. (Remember what a '53 looks like? I had a blue metalic 1953 two-door hardtop Chevy at Johnson, white tuck-n-roll, bucket seats, etc. I drive it daily in the Spring & Summer months.)
Our 50th Reunion in Sep 2015 was lots of fun! I maintain the Class '65 Class Master List (emails and addresses) so if you change your email, let me know?
See Class Reunions. Keep your email and mailing address up to date when it changes. Email changes this site for our Class '65 Master List. Have a great year!
