Joe's Story

Here is a snapshot of what the last 20 years have been like for me and my family. After high school I went to Grossmont College and played some football while earning my AA degree in general education. I attended San Diego State for a couple of semesters and then Errin and I got married and started a family. I put school on hold for a while and started working in law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff for San Diego County. In 1995 we bought our first home on the same street that I grew up on (close to Granite Hills High). By this time Errin and I had two kids Broc and Kaila who were four and one in 95. Over the next five years I became involved in coaching my kids team sports while balancing work and family. Through that time we were fortunate enough to be able to have Errin be a fulltime stay home mom. Errin is very good at what she does and it has been a total blessing. I wish all stay at home moms knew how great of an impact they are making in the lives of their children for generations to come. I can not overlook how my life changed dramatically in June of 1996. A good friend and neighbor invited me to a Promise Keepers event that was being held at Qualcom Stadium. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior at that event and nothing has been the same. With this decision came great relief and an overwhelming feeling of forgiveness. In the last 12 years of my walk with Christ I have grown and matured through him. By no means has this decision made my life easy. On the contrary it has made it much more difficult. The world and all that is in it makes it a difficult battle to draw closer to our savior. Knowing this I still accept the challenge and battle on. Those of you who have been on this journey know what I am talking about. I know that I am far from perfect but the beautiful thing is that I am forgiven because of the debt that he paid in full. This journey has taught me that as individuals we are either growing or dieing there is no inbetween. I am the first to promote and practice balance within life but I know that for me moderation feels like weekness. In other words moderation is for sissies! In 1996 I also reclaimed my birth name of Cormier along with reestablishing a relationship with my biological father and his side of the family (thanks for opening my eyes Errin). I added this because all who will read this will know me as Joe Schulmeister. Believe me it is strange all of the sudden having a different last name at the age of 26 (Thanks Errin for the hours of dedication in completeing all of the paperwork). In 2000 Errin and I decided that it was time to go on an adventure and step out of our comfort zone. We looked for months and then decided to move to Boise, Idaho. By July 1st of 2000 we were living in our new home which was in Meridian, Idaho just 12 miles west of Boise. The first year was difficult being away from family and friends but it has been a true blessing. The outdoor activities, change of seasons and the slower pace have been refreshing. On Sept. 6th 2001 our third child Ashlyn was born just five days prior to 9/11. I remember taking Broc and Kaila to school on the morning of 9/11 and hearing the news on the radio. It was strange not seeing a plane in the sky for two days. In January of 2002 I sustained an off duty injury that forced me out of law enforcement for three years. Our family went through a lot for a long period of time. The lord brought us through that trial and we all learned a great deal from it. During my time out of law enforcement I worked at a local high school. For a couple of y...Expand for more
ears I was able to lead the FCA huddle (Fellowship Of Christian Athletes) at that high school. It was awesome getting to know most of the students and leading a ministry that incorporated two of my passions, Christ and Athletics. In 2006 I was able to get back into law enforcement as an officer with Boise PD. I was also able to complete my degree on line at the University of Phoenix. After a year and a half of that I transfered back to my original Idaho department the Ada County Sheriff's Office. I am currently back in the saddle as a senior Deputy with the department. It seems like I lost a lot of time and it all took me full circle but I gained a certain amount of life experience that would not have come without this trial. Currently Errin is maintaining a full schedule as the organizer of our household as well as being a volunteer in the prayer ministry at our church and Ashlyn's kindergarten. Broc is a sophomore in high school and has always been a great student earning mostly A's and some B's. He received his varsity letter as a Freshman in track and as a soph. in football. Broc won the distract track meet in 8th and 9th grade in both the 100m and 200m. As a freshman he qualified for the state meet with an 11.1 in the 100m. This year as a soph. he played varsity football and the team won the state championship in the 5A big school division. Broc playes safety just like his old man did. Although I believe that he is much better then I ever was. I think the fact that he is bigger and faster then I was in high school has helped him (6' 175lbs). Broc is a great kid but it is still hard to believe that we have a son that is almost half way through high school. Kaila is in 8th grade and she is also an honor roll student. Kaila currently plays volleyball and runs track. In 5th, 6th and 7th grades she was on a traveling softball team that played tournaments in the five northwestern states. In sixth grade her team finished second in the state tournament for the 12 and under division. Kaila had two homeruns in one of those state games. Track has become her new passion and as a 7th grader she won the district long jump title with a mark of 15 feet beating a field of all 8th graders. Kaila also volunteers in the prayer ministry at our church. Ashlyn is in kindergarten and has been reading for the past few months. Ashlyn loves people and she loves to talk. Ashlyn is by far our most demanding child in the sense that she loves to test the limits on everything. She definitely has an adventurous spirit. This summer we are all looking forward to visiting San Diego again. It has been a few years since we have been back and it will be nice to see family and friends again along with going to the beach. I am looking forward to seeing as many Granite Hills Eagles as possible at the reunion. Well, it has been over a year since I posted this initial recap of the last 20 years. The reunion was awesome and it was great to see everyone who attended. There were a lot of missing faces but the ones that were there made it all worth while. This school year is coming to a close and it is hard to fathom that our oldest, Broc, will be a senior in the fall. Kaila survived her freshman year and Ashlyn had a ton of fun in first grade. Since our youngest is now 7 years old Errin and I have been lucky enough to start enjoying some fun overnight trips together. I hope that this past year has treated everyone well and I look forward with anticipation to when we will meet up again! God Bless You All and Keep Moving Forward! Joe Cormier
