Joe's Story
Life
Graduated Brinkley, AR in 1964, did two years of college work in 3.5 years at GA Tech and Rhodes College where I met the finest group of young men (the members of PiKA fraternity). Seeing the handwriting on the wall, I joined the US Coast Guard in Nov. 1968. After bootcamp in Alameda, CA, I was stationed aboard the USCGC Minnetonka from 3/69 to 12/69. Left the Minnetonka and got married to Susie Walker on the way to Yeoman school in NYC. Went aboard the USCGC Sycamore for 18 months in Memphis, TN, then to USCG Group Lower Mississippi River, also in Memphis to the end of my tour in August 1972.
I went back to college, received bachelors' and masters' degrees in accounting and went to work for the US Treasury Department for 10 years. My wife and I got divorced after 13 years and two sons. All of my high school friends and several of my military friends knew Susie. She died last year.
I am now remarried to a lovely lady who had two children in a prior marriage. We are located in Mississippi and celebrated our 25 wedding anniversary last month.
I work to live and live see my granddaughters and grandson. Presently (7/5/9) they are Mckinley, 6, San Antonio, TX, Destiny, 6 yesterday, Jackson, MS, Ethan, 4, San Antonio, TX and Lexie, 2, Anniston, AL.
Since leaving the US Treasury 25 years ago, I have worked for three banks in various capacities in the commercial lending area. With my present bank, I moved over into Trust portfolio managemen...Expand for more
t, which I have been doing for about 12 years.
Hobbies
For the past 20 years or so, I have volunteered as a trainer and mentor for investment clubs in our area, teaching stock analysis, accounting and other things of that type.
I enjoy reading science fiction, biographies and books related to my field of endeavor.
To get out of the house, I still enjoy fishing on quiet, peaceful lakes alone (or alternatively with my grandson or a granddaughter, one at a time).
One of my great joys in spending time with my extended family. Family weddings are such a happy time especially when lots of cousins and their children make time to be there.
It is rare that I miss one of these happy events. Joe Clifton has a son getting married in central Texas in a few months and we will make it to that one.
Pets
Although 20 month old Buster is our only pet, he is the third in a line of Pembroke Welch Corgis that has stretched over the past 19 years of our lives. He is fun to watch and play with and he gets along well with the grandchildren and all the children and parents in our neighborhood love him. He remains somewhat untrainable when it comes to automobiles and chewing shoes, socks, etc.
Athletics
Although I am not inclined toward athletics, my wife is Shodon in Seibukan Karate and has won national tournaments in her age group. She is planning a trip to Okinawa for 2010 for training with the 10th degree black belt that is the overall leader of the style.
