Joe's Story
Life
Hey gang, Joe is in the house. I live in Apex, NC which is in the Raleigh-Durham area. I support Lenovo (formerly IBM PC) for my company and am responsible for them selling our products to their customers. I am married to a wonderful filly from Philly named Stephanie and now have three great kids, Samantha (12), Alec (8) and Abigail (4). After high school I served in the army for four years, becoming a sergeant. I served in Alaska with the 172nd Infantry Brigade and the 6th Infantry Division. While in the army, I jumped out of airplanes, rappelled out of helicopters, skied and snowshoed all over the great white north. I then attended and graduated from San Diego State University (I needed to thaw out!) with a BA in Political Science and Economics. I also have an MBA in Marketing from Bentley College in Boston. I have worked for various high-tech firms, including IBM, which stands for "I've Been Moved," which I have done a lot of, having lived in Anchorage, San Diego (twice), Boston (twice), Atlanta, Philadelphia and Raleigh-Durham since graduation! Feel free to drop me a line , Joe.
Military
I joined the army in December of 1982. It was expected. My father was retired Navy and my brother Marty is still in the Navy. I was looking for college money and adventure. I found both! The Sunday after we graduated I arrived at Ft. Benning, GA. There I was trained as an army infantryman and made th...Expand for more
e parachute jumps needed to graduate from Airborne School. My drill sergeant laughed when he saw my orders - I had been assigned to Alaska! I arrived in October 1983 and stayed for the remainder of my four year enlistment, serving with B Company 5/327th Infantry of the 172d Light Infantry Brigade and B Company 2/17th Infantry of the 6th Infantry Division (L); Hooah! Alaska is a beautiful place but being a soldier, particularly a grunt, is very difficult. We slept outside in below zero temperatures, carried huge rucksacks on snowshoes for miles, and just plain froze our asses off. Besides that, there is the well docimented shortage of female companionship!
I rose from the lowest ranking soldier in my unit to the Sergeant in charge of our squad. I also attended Air Assault School, got a few medals and drank a few, or more beers. Sometimes, I think about the crazy things I did and the ability I had to do them. I cannot believe that I carried over a hundred pounds of equipment for 12 miles on snow shoes or other feats of endurance and difficulty. Do I miss the hard life? No. But like everyone I know who has served, I miss the sense of belonging to something greater than myself and I especially miss my buddies. You become closer to friends in the military than you can imagine due to the shared hardships. I miss the guys of Blackfoot company. Wish we could drink a few beers together again. Blackfoot!
