Joe's Story

7/14/2008 Those of us who grew up in Manitowoc had the privilege of experiencing small-town America at a time when innocence was an ample commodity. Heck, some of our lives could have served as the model for Beaver Cleaver (I, for one, thought I looked a lot like Jerry Mathers and knew several Eddie Haskell's). Black-and-white TV was on its way out to be replaced by color and cable, but we were the generation who had the first crack at Gilligan's Island, The Beverly Hillbillies, Star Trek, and Hogan's Heroes. I think life was simpler back then. Last summer (2007) I spent a week in Manitowoc with my 16 year-old son and was driving south on 10th Street when I saw two small boys delivering the Harry Times out of a red, Radio Flyer wagon. I got a lump in my throat and wondered again what it was like. I didn't realize I missed Manitowoc so much until my recent trips back "home." So, without further delay, here is what I have been up to since 1974... Because I didn't think I had the brains to make it in college, I enlisted in the US Air Force (with Tom Snowden and Denny Schrank). My specialty was computers and cryptography, and the highlight of my 4 years was living near the Soviet border in far eastern Turkey, spying on the Soviets. Lots of camels and sand, lots of stinky men, but no trees and no women...but we had lots of beer. I returned home and was hired by IBM and got married. The marriage ended after 24 years, but I have three beautiful daughters (29, 28, 25) and one adopted son (16), and one grand baby. I now live in Tucson, Arizona, and for those of you who have not spent time here, it lives up to its billing: It is a dry heat, but a very beautiful place to live. During my time in the USAF and IBM, I have traveled much of Europe and can speak enough German to get me by or get me in trouble, or in the case of an emergency, enough German to buy a be...Expand for more
er in any beer house or ratskeller. I have held several senior management positons at IBM and am currenlty a Program Director for support strategies in conjunction with our storage products. Because I wanted to prove to myself that I was indeed smart enough to attend college, I graduated with a BS in Business Administration and Management with a 3.9 GPA, which I can assure you surpassed my hard earned C's at Lincoln High School. My hobbies include running in the desert near my home in Tucson, especially the mountain trails in our foothills. I mastered the art of discerning a stick from a Western Diamondback rattlesnake, a skill that has come in handy on numerous treks into the hinterland. I work out religiously with my wife and am in what I think might be the best shape of my life (I am 6'1" and 178 pounds), and run between a 6 and 7 minute mile. Some of you might remember me as short, which is true: I grew 4 inches after I left high school. I also am an assistant scout master for my son's Boy Scout Troop (I hope he makes the Eagle rank next year), so that takes up a lot of my time. I used to play guitar and piano but I don't have much for those any more (why did God only give us 24 hours?). After having spent those 30 years at IBM, I now know what I want to do when I grow up. I am nearing completion on my first novel and have begun work on #2 and #3. You might have heard that novelists write what they know, so mine is what is called a bildungsroman, which is a way of saying that the story is about a young man who has to discover his own path in life, which is apart from what his father thinks he should do. It is set in three distinct time periods in Manitowoc: 1939, 1968, and present day. Maybe one day you'll see it on the NY Times bestseller list. If any of you are in the Tucson area drop me a line and stop by, or drop me an email. Take care!
