Joe's Story
College
After high school, I attended UNL for 1 1/2 years as an Engineering major. I decided that this wasn't what I wanted to do, so I moved back to Omaha and enrolled at UNO. Over the next few years I moved from Engineering to Business to "at last" Computer Science. I graduated in 99 with the Computer Degree.
I returned to school in 2001 enrolling at Bellevue University. In 18 months, I received my MBA.
I'm done for now, but you never know, I might get that bug again.
Workplace
I currently work for OPPD here in Omaha. I have been here for just under 7 years now. For the first 6 1/2 years I worked in Information Technology as a Desktop Technician. I was responsible for responding to PC trouble calls throughout the company. It was a good job and I met a lot of people, but it started to get a little old considering my aspirations. le jobs within the company that sparked my interest. So, this pass spring, I was offered an opportunity that I couldn't pass up. I am now working as an Energy Marketer. Although this is a far cry from what I studied in college, I felt that this would be a job that could give me a more rounded look at OPPD. I'm now primarily responsible for maintaining our power plant generation to keep up with load that our customers use. If we have too much power, we sell it to companies that need it. If we don't have enough, we buy from other companies. It's can be describes as a "balancing act" (supply/demand) along with a "stock market" operation. The hours are a little hectic (rotating 12 hour shifts between day and night), but it works well. I work about 56 hours a week including weekends for 3 weeks, but then I get 2 weeks off to do nothing. The 2 weeks off makes it worth it.
