Joel's Story
Life
After graduation, I attended Cal-State Long Beach. In 1966, I got a job at Disneyland. Naturally I bumped into many of our classmates at both places. I majored in chemistry until 1967 when I changed to Business Finance and graduated in 1970.
In 1968, someone told me there were openings in the Riverside Army National Guard. I signed up for 6 years spending the last 4 at the Santa Ana Armory on Warner Ave.
In 1970, I was hired to work in accounting at Disneyland and moved on to the corporate offices of Walker & Lee, Inc. (real estate broker) in 1973.
1974 was the year of my first marriage to a woman from Albuquerque, NM. We lived in Fullerton until 1978 and moved to Mission Viejo.
At Walker & Lee, I was introduced to the business of Mortgage Banking which has been a large part of my business life ever since.
Our son, Brandon, was born in 1977 which was the year I landed a job as a Vice President at The Hammond Company (Mortgage Banker) located at the corner of Campus and Von Karmann in Newport Beach.
While at The Hammond Company, I also got involved with computers. I bought a Radio Shack Model I microcomputer in January, 1979.
In 1981, I went to work at Beverly Hills Savings as a Vice President in the Mortgage Banking division where I worked until the summer of 1984.
I found that there were many people that needed help with their information systems, so I struck out as a consultant. I've been involved with Mortgage Banking information systems ever since.
In 1988, I was divorced and my ex moved to Albuquerque with my 11 year-old son - much sadness.
1989 was our 25th reunion where I bumped into Connie Damron. It turned out to be quite a bump as we were wed a year later in San Clemente then moved to Riverside with her son Scott - much happiness.
In 1998, I was assisting some friends with opening a Mortgage Banking branch for a bank based in St. Petersburg, Florida. One thing led to another and I ended up commuting from Riverside to St. Petersburg for two years.
The bank decided that Mortgage Banking was too risky, so they closed down the division. On the way back to...Expand for more
California, an old friend who owns a software company offered me a job in Jacksonville. For the first year, you guessed it, I commuted weekly from Riverside to Jacksonville.
In 2001, Connie and I bought a house in Jacksonville and moved to Florida.
Connie taught high school for 10 years in Tustin. She had a daughter, Stephanie, with her first husband. After a divorce from Bob, she attended Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. After marrying Dana Nickell, having a son, Scott, practicing law for 5 years, and divorcing Dana, she got a job in Riverside (1990) as an assistant superintendent and the district (Alvord Unified) business manager. Connie retired in 2001.
In 2004, my son was married to a very nice lady, also named Stephanie, whom he had met in high school. They live in Albuquerque and have a 2 1/2 year old daughter, Sidney, who is just delightful. Sidney was born on my mother's birthday in September, 2005. Brandon and Stephanie are expecting their second child in early May, 2008.
November, 2007 saw another happy event - the marriage of Connie's daughter, Stephanie Sparrow, to Jason Shomer at the Marriott in Fashion Island. They are living in Glendale. Jason is a working improvisational comedian and comedy writer.
During our time in California for the wedding, Connie and I attended a rehearsal dinner hosted at Stephanie's dad's home in Villa Park (Jason's parents live in New Jersey) where I had a chance to meet Stephanie's step-mom (Linda) and chat for a bit. It seems some of her clients are mortgage bankers, including a very good friend of mine (since 1985).
The day after we returned to Florida, I got a call from an old friend (since 1958). He works with Linda, Stephanie's step-mom!
Update as of 2/20/2017:
I will be 70 at the end of April, 2017. This will also mark my retirement. We have four grandchildren. Two in Albuquerque, and two in Glendale, CA. So, Connie and I are going on the road in May. We have family scattered in many places between here and California and will visit with most of them. This includes Tennessee, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.
