My Review ÿ Mary Stanhope 5 Stars Escaping Deathÿs Sting By Joel Lee Russell This is a story about Joel Lee Russell, yes, he was a Vietnam Vet, but, he was also a brother, a husband, a protector, a server, a friend, and a Marine. What I liked about it is he starts at the beginning so you can see where he came from how he was looking at things and the normal mischief any boy can get into growing up. Ok, so maybe not everyone has that many in a family. What was lacked in money was shown in love and caring and sharing and you can see that throughout his story. Between the War, the changing country sides and times it was definitely a challenge for him and people around him during a time when a lot was not recognized. When soldiers had returns the fights to regain normalcy in their lives was anything but easy and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was not so easily diagnosed, as it is today. Joel has lived and you can see that in this book. Its obvious Joel is a survivor and wanted and needed to tell his story and for that you should read this book titled ÿEscaping Deathÿs Stingÿ because it really is a good story by Joel Lee Russell. This is a rainy day, hot chocolate, fireside read.

"Escaping Death's Sting" A Combat Marine's Life Story by Joel Russell (4.5 Stars) is a well written true story of a boy who grows up in the late 1940's in Columbus, Ohio with a family that has 10 boys and 2 girls. Joel grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and was a member of the 5th Street Gang. He tells of his trials and tributations he experienced as he grew into a man in a humorous and also a serious manner. His adventures as a child hold your attention as well as the experiences he has growing up and eventually becoming a Marine and is stationed in Viet Nam. He is very graphic in his rendition of his life and at times is something that is hard to read. ...Expand for more
This book is different from any others that I have read. It is well worth the read. (Louise Kennedy) (Review Team member)

Escaping Deathÿs Sting is a beautifully written book full of vignettes on a boyÿs life. Joel Lee Russell is nothing if not honest, telling his life story with humor, insight and humility. Even memories that many people share, like the first time one plays Spin the Bottle, are fun to read and allow you to remember your own story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet, honest and straightforward memoir. Laura Wright Midland, TX

Review Escaping Death's Sting, A Combat Marine's Life Story By: Tina Avon (4 stars) I am Canadian and, therefore, have not really been overly exposed to the issues surrounding war ÿ although, as a human being, I have seen the horrors of it on TV. However, lately, there have been many, many young Canadians being killed in our current war and THAT has brought the war into the forefront for me. I think that most people, although they feel horror at the wars around us (past and present) cannot really know what its truly like ÿ and then you find a book such as Escaping Deathÿs Sting that talks about war in a whole different manner ÿ directly from the mouth of a survivor. I had a very hard time reading this book ÿ I was horrified for most of it and kept asking myself how we could actually do this to one another and at the same time wondering how on earth these soldiers managed to hang on and not go crazy. That is the power of this book ÿ at times I felt as though I was right there, in the middle of the action. The descriptions, details and storytelling were so accurate it was scary. I admire the author for getting through it and for finding his strength in a higher power and I admire the author for having the courage to write about it. Excellent read.
