Joel's Story
Graduated from Redwood in 1966. Went to UCSB (with a semester at College of Marin and a quarter at UC Berkeley). After playing "Musical Major" for a couple of years, graduated in 1971 with a BA in HIstory. Found that this degree and 50 cents could get me a cup of coffee at Sambo's, so I painted houses for a year. In 1972-73, I returned to UCSB and earned a California elementary school teaching credential. I then found the credential and 75 cents could get me a cup of coffee. Continue...Expand for more
d house painting and did some substitute teaching. Eventually got my first teaching job in Santa Barbara. Then I got a chance to teach in Europe for 4 years (3 in Berlin, 1 in Rotterdam). Returned to the US and accepted a position as 4th grade teacher in Buellton, CA, which turned out to be a beautiful area. I worked in various capacities for the school district, mostly teaching grades 3,4,5, then as Technology Director, then as Principal of Oak Valley School (K-5) until the present.
