John's Story

John (Juan) Aguilar, I actually belong to the class of 1966, I registered as alumni of class of 1964, because that was the last year I attend high school and I am pictured in the 64-yearbook. I was born in Yakima on Sept. 11, 1946, but raised and educated in Sunnyside. Like tipical Mexican-American families of the era we were a farmworker family, we worked and harvested all the local ag-crops grown at the time. I married Seferina Gomez, (she's in the 64-yearbook) in the fall of 1964, we made our home in Sunnyside, had two daughters back to back. On July 15, 1968, at the start of the Mint harvest I lost my right arm to the elbow in a mint-chopper accident. I was in and out of the hospital in two weeks and by August 15, I was hired to work for the Sunnyside Equal Opportunity Center in Sunnyside that started my career in social/public sector work. I took and passed with high marks the GED, test and progessed quickly in State employment, Employment Security and Dept. of L & I. In 1975, I was hired by the now infamous (W.P.P.S.S,) in the Human Resource Division, for five-years I was in the hiring team that took the Supply System from 300 to over 3,000 high tech employees to construct and operate five nuclear power plants. ...Expand for more
In 1980, I was recruited to work in the private sector for an American corporation with manufactory plants in Mexico, that started my long and successful private sector career upon returning to the Yakima Valley, I started a convenience store business and by 1989, I stumbled into banking and had a very rewarding career for 24 years that took me throughout the whole of the United States and other foreign country's. Seferina and I presently reside in Yakima have three adult daughter's the eldest is married and gave us three beautiful granddaughters and the eldest married two years ago after attaining her BA Degree in Socialogy at CWU. two months ago she made us proud great-grand parents to our grandson (Jackson). I am proud to have my deep roots in Sunnyside and the education I recieved allowed me to have a successful career, that took me allover the world and I have retained friendships with many people from the places I traveled to. I am glad to be back home and plan to attend my first ever class reunion, I don't know if any or many of you will remember me, I had a very small circle of school friends and I don't think I stoodout very much? In any event we can become friends now. Respectfully. juan (John) Aguilar
