John's Story

Life SERGEANT FIRST CLASS JOHN C. ALBRECHT entered the Army National Guard on 18 September 1984. He completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia as an 11H, Anti-Armor Infantryman. After serving in the National Guard for a year, he decided to enter the Army. In January 1986, he attended Field Artillery School as an 82C, Surveyor, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He returned to Fort Benning to attend U.S Army Airborne School and become a Paratrooper. His first assignment was Survey Specialist and later Battalion Chief Surveyor, HHB, 18th Field Artillery Brigade (ABN), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was selected to go to Venezuela to meet with dignitaries and train their Army in Artillery survey techniques. In February 1989, he decided his true calling was that of an Infantryman and went back to Fort Benning to attend Anti-Armor refresher course. Upon completion, he was assigned as a Section Leader, CSC, 1st Battalion, 503d Infantry Regiment, Camp Hovey Korea. During his tour in Korea, he completed 21 patrols on the Demiliterized Zone earning him the Imjin Scout Award. In February 1991, he attended Drill Sergeant School at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, where he was selected as Drill Sergeant of the cycle on numerous occasions. After taking off the hat, he worked as an instructor for the Combat Indoctrination Committee specializing in U.S. Weapons and Demolitions. In August 1994, he was reassigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina and served with Delta Company, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. . Army Recruiter School and was assigned to the Kansas City Battalion. In July 2000, he received orders for Alaska and was assigned as a Platoon Sergeant to Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment. After 25 months, SFC Albrecht was hand picked by the Garrison Command Sergeant Major to become the Fort Wainwright Installation Services NCOIC, Headquarters, United States Army Garrison, where he will finish 21 years of service to the Army. SFC Albrecht is a graduate of the Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, Drill Sergeant School, Army Recruiters Course, Equal Opportunity Representative Course, Instructor Training Course, Jumpmaster School, Jungle Expert School, and the Air Force’s AMC Affiliation Airlift Planners Course. SFC Albrecht’s awards and decorations include Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, three Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, three Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), National Defense Service Medal with one star, Humanitarian Service Medal (2d Award), Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 3, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with numeral 2, Master Parachutist Badge with Combat Distinguishing Device, one Bronze Service Star (BSS), Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Rifleman’s Badge, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, the Gold Recruiter Badge with two Sapphires, British Jump Wings and the Joint Meritorious Service Ribbon. SFC Albrecht retired 1 November 2005. He is married to Oki. They have a son John and daughter Kristina, residing in Fairbanks, Alaska. SFC Albrecht and his family plan to remain in Fairbanks after retirement.
