John Askings:

CLASS OF 1992

John's Story

It was the best of times... it was the worst of times... *coughs* Errrmmm... In the vain attempt to be brief, here is my story since 1992. I started at UNO that fall with the intent on getting an engineering degree and to later design roller coasters. My, the lofty wonders of being a youth, eh? Things started to go downhill in October of that year when my father passed away rather suddenly. Within months, my mother had her first heart attack and began to develop other illnesses. So there I was going to school full time, working full time to help with the upkeep of the family and the medical benefits, and taking care of an ill mother. I managed this for 2 years until, unfortunately, I had to leave college. Not long after, my mother passed away and I moved in with my best friend and girlfriend at the time. About a year later, due to situational stresses, we broke apart and I left for Florida. (She and I remain good friends to this day, btw.) I lived in West Palm Beach, Florida, for about 8 years. It was there that I started working for PrimeCo, which is now known as Verizon Wireless. During this time, I received my MCSE, Cisco Systems, and Comptia certificates and moved into the Data Sales/Engineering side of the house with the company. Basically, I showed people how to use their cell phones with their computers, their company¿s backhaul services, etc. Blackberry is a good example. During this time, I got back into writing. I have been a...Expand for more
regular participant in the National Novel Writer¿s Month (NaNoWriMo.org), completing my novel every year except for the first. I have written several items, and even had a few short stories published. Yeah, I know, after looking at this, even so far, its hard to imagine I would write anything that was short. But I digress. Three years ago, I moved to San Francisco. I absolutely love it here. Ignore the rumors about how cloudy, drizzly, and foggy this place is. I honestly believe that locals started those rumors to help keep this oasis to themselves. The weather is perfect year round. Never hot, never cold. My average electric bill is about 30 bucks a month. HAH!! That doesn¿t make up for the 2250 a month rent here though. SHEESH. Since moving here, I discovered that little missing piece of my soul completely by accident. Its that piece of your soul that screams, ¿THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING YOUR WHOLE LIFE!¿ Looking back, I can see how I sort have been doing this since my elementary school days. Anyway, I am an Improvisor (yes, I spelled it that way on purpose. For the explanation, please check out one of the troupes I work with at un-scripted.com - I love you Un-Scripted Theater!). I have attended classes at the renown BATS improv school (improv.org) and have begun working with their Sunday Players group. I think that¿s enough for now. Be well and good luck my John Ehret cohorts. Come and see a show one day! John
