John's Story
Sorry I missed the graduation ! I was a bored pissed-off truant, so my parents put me in military school to "straighten me up" for my senior year. I learned how to attack with saber on a galloping and jumping horse, as in the Napoleonic wars. I got good grades, and I love horses ! My draft number was 339, so I got to stay home from the Vietnam War. Only lottery I ever won.
I was in some world-shaking Rock bands as keyboard player, namely "OB'" and "12th Street and 4", and was the only white boy in soul bands the "Dreamlovers" and the "Van Dykes," of Annapolis fame. I had a BMW R69S motorcycle and an Austin-Healey 3000 soft-top sports car. They were fairly cheap and available in those days. I could retire on what they'd be worth today !
In 1972, I returned to California, where I had been born in 1949, and I remained there mostly ever since. I'm a graduate of the University of California Santa Barbara, and lived and worked most of my life in Santa Barbara and Monterey in the computer software industry.
Now I'm "semi-retired" in Alicante, Spain, where we produce handmade guitar capos of my design. We have 6 workers, including myself. This is an anarcho-syndicalist enterprise, meaning NO stocks or investors - the workers own and manage it all. Not to be confused with communist, where the state owns it all, or fascist, where the oligarchic multinational corporations own everything (nearly where the world is now, alas).
Music has always been a big part of my life. I like classical as well as Rock, Besides writing tunes I am researching some of the great Spanish organ composers such...Expand for more
as Cabanilles and Santa Maria, and experimenting with inverted harmonic series and musical progressions played backwards.
I also sing beautiful karaoke, I think. AWOOOOOO! I like 50's to '80s music. Pop music has sucked for a long time since then, with a very few exceptions, but it's getting more listenable, more professional if less creative.
Spain has a very strong musical tradition separate from the US-UK Rock strain. I recommend especially the late Rocio Jurado, and the young Pablo Alboran (see them on YouTube, and recordings available from Amazon).
I do miss you all, and Maryland in beautiful honeysuckle-scented Spring, fireflies, and good crabs and oysters !
Although I've heard the Bay is too messed up nowadays for such good seafood as I remember. Please campaign to clean up that watershed, which involves 6 States, mainly Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia !
Please read the memoir of John Smith, the first English explorer of our region --- the Chesapeake water was clear, no sea-nettles, and big rock-fish were so numerous they'd jump into his boat ! And remember the UM mascot, the terrapin (now extinct). These conditions CAN BE restored ! There are many examples of recently restored habitats and ecosystems now. Nature is amazingly resilient when given a chance !
I'm in good health, happy, and wish you all the same ! Lots of love ! - John
Good pals, our classmates, who have passed, and I sorely miss : Phil Kim and Louie Mortimer
