Linda's Story
Life
Who would have thought that I'd be a bicycle racer? After going to art school for undergrad (Tyler) and grad Southern Illinois), I turned out to be unmarketable as far as art was concerned.
At SIU, one of the first things I did was to meet John, and the next thing I did was start training for bike racing. John and I stayed together, both unmarketable academics, and after a stint as caretakers on an estate outside of Phila., we moved to California to go into the bicycle business.
Now, 30 years later, we live in an old neighborhood in Sacramento, are sales reps in the cycling industry, concentrating on custom clothing for teams (there's the art connection), and we're still racing bikes.
I've won nationals in my age group 6 times now. the photo shows me cyclocrossing. It's kind of like bicycle steeplechase, and it's my latest passion.
Workplace
I lived like a starving student until I was 40. After college, I went to grad school, and found I was unmarketable as a college art professor, though I did get a one person show at The College of William and Mary, where I was in the final three to get a job...Expand for more
. After a couple of years, I decided to make other plans. Meanwhile, John was finished will all of his course work for a PhD in Philosophy, but lost interest in the subject and couldn't finish his dissertation.
So, we became caretakers on an estate outside of Philadelphia. I had a studio and showed my work. We became increasingly involved in the bike racing scene as club volunteers and race promoters as well as racers. After 6 years in fool's paradise, our benefactor went into a retirement home, and we decided to head to California to go into the bike business. We moved to San Jose where John's mother lived, just in time for the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989. We got jobs at Shaws' Cycles, and worked in the bike shop for 3 years.
While doing this we were still racing and doing lots of club volunteering. After 2 years I started part time as an independent sales rep, and after a year John joined me. We had some bad lines at first, but stuck with it, and are still at it. We have two great lines we've been with for years (Voler Team Apparel and DeFeet socks), and surprisingly now live a middle class life.
