John's Story

I have nothing but good memories about Shades Valley. I was a part of the 10 percent of the class that made the upper 90 percent possible. That said, I believe the teachers did all they could to help me learn. On a lark I took the ACT and did well enough to get a provisional admission to Montevallo. I stuck it out four years and got a double major in political science/history. I thought I wanted to teach, but just didn't have the heart for it. I ended up moving to New Orleans and working in the oil patch for Texaco. It was great fun and helped me see the world. I married my college sweetheart and we resettled in Houston, where we have raised two sons, Aaron, 25; and Zach, 21. turned to the oil industry a few years ago. I now manage public relations for an offshore driller with 34 rigs around the world. This takes me to Brazil, Mexico, the North Sea, West Africa and the Middle East. Somewhat later in life than many, I returned to school and earned an MBA in international business. All in all I have a lot to be grateful for related to those years at Valley. I had great friends there, and really benefited from taking Buddy Spark's Vocational Ed class. He was an inspirational guy who took an interest in many students who didn't seem to be college bound. Living in Houston, I don't get to see many of my Shades Valley classmates.
