John's Story
Life
After graduating from Hialeah HS, I completed a Naval Reserve recruit-to-airman program at Opa-Locka, then married my high school sweetheart (the former Janet Hartle). We mved to south-central Texas, where my family had relocated. After two years as a newspaper reporter, I went on active duty with the Navy -- and started a 25-year career. I became a photojournalist and public affairs specialist, with a "minor" in broadcasting. Assignments took Jan and me around the world, and to Washington, D.C., where I retired from the Navy as a master chief journalist. The Navy career left me a veteran of the Vietnam War and the Beirut peacekeeping force, and I put in tours aboard seven ships.
I was able to parlay all my training and experience into a second career as a writer for a commercial publication called Navy Times, which is published primarily for Navy people and their families.

ll retirement, and I'm considering it.
For all our travels, we returned to Hialeah only once, in 1965, to see Jan's parents. Her home has long since been bulldozed over to make way for a highway, and her only living relative is a sister living in North Florida. None of my few remaining relatives live in Florida.
I wish we had maintained contact with our friends in Hialeah, and hope our late arrival to ClassMates.Com will generate correspondence with some of those we knew.
School
Worked as a newspaper reporter for two years out of high school, then served in the Navy for 25 years (including tours at sea, in Vietnam and in Beirut). Worked another 320 years as senior writer for Navy Times, a commercial newspaper for Navy people and others interested in the Navy. Forced to retire this year due to serious vision problems. Now learning more about computers and planning a third career as soon as I can figure out what to do. Happily married to the former Janet Hartle for nearly 46 years. Have a great day!
