John's Story

My Mom and I opened the Sand Mountain Coffee House where people like Jerry Jeff, Guy Clark, Towns, Janice, and hundreds of other amazing talents played. Not long after that I joined the Marines and did that for a while. Lots of fun that was. When I came back I became both a peace activist and a serious drug addict. I bet a lot of you did that too. When the war ended, I gave up on the the anti war stuff, but I continued with my serious schedual A narcotic addiction. I did a lot of music, I was a conductor for Southern Pacific Rail Road, I opened the first club on 6th street in Austin, I had two totaly ridiculous marriages and one great daughter. A year after she was born I went into treatment, got in the program and have remained clean and sober for almost 23 years. I met my life companion and we raised my daughter and had a lot of out door type adventures all over the country. I had a music store in Houston for about 12 years . The last 5 years it was open it was next to Rockafellers at the corner of Washington Ave. and Heights Blvd. When the daughter was grown, my companion and I sold our house in the Heights for way too much money and moved to Wimberley Texas where we lived in a modest log cabin on the banks of the Blanco River. I have continued to play music regularly as a part of my life. I buy and sell vintage guitars a...Expand for more
nd related stuff for a living. Recently I started buying, refurbishing and selling vintage air craft aluminium travel trailers as well. My precious life companion Nancy passed away unexpectedly in early March. I find myself alone after 18 years of un-married bliss. I am making the adjustment, but it is hard. With her passing, I find myself financialy secure, in good health and I still have my youthful good looks. I have an amazing amount of old friends. Many going back to high school times. I also have a lot of friends I've made since moving to Wimberley. I have a life time of music friends as well. But in spite of that, I sure feel alone right now. So, that's the storey of John Carrick since high school. Sometimes I sit out on the star gazing deck we built on top of the log cabin and wonder, after everything that I did wrong, how did things work out right ? I am bothering to write this for two reasons. Number one is, that I find writing about my current situation to be cathartic. The second is because I figure it to be most unlikely anyone will read it at all. But if you do, I hope you are well and comfortable in the world. Peace Johnny C AKA John Carrick PS Star date August 1 2008. My wife and dear companion of 19 years died in March. It's been rough since then, but I guess I'll make it thru all this.
