John's Story
After graduating from Marian in 1971, my lottery number for the draft was 19. Having flat feet, the Army excluded me from service later that year. A year later I found myself working offshore in the Guld of Mexico aboard a seismograph boat. After a short time, my job was transferred to Southeast Asia where I spent nearly 18 months in Southeast Asia in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, Brunei, and Indonesia.
While in Asia I got the traveling bug taking numerous trips to see sights in the area. After returning home to Bellaire in 1975 for several weeks, I left again with a backpack of belongings heading south beginning in Mexico and a year later I made it overland to Buenos Aires and then Rio de Janeiro. From there my travels took me to Europe where I spent 6 months. In the fall of 1976 I traveled from Greece east to Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and finally Nepal.

n early adopter of CAD for drafting and later design. At age 30 I left that job and started my much-delayed college career at UT in Austin earning a Bachelors in Computer Science. From there my family, now 4 persons, moved briefly to Oregon to work for Tektronix. A year later I was back in Houston working for Dow Chemical.
In 1992 I went into business for myself. Over the past many years I have worked for lots of industries in lots of places keeping Houston and then Austin as my home. From 2008 to 2020 I worked in the nuclear power industry initially as a contract IT Consultant and then as a contract IT/Cyber Security Project Manager. Those contracts too me across the country at 8 nuclear power plants. I spent 2020 in rural southeastern Washington State as the Hanford WTP ISSM at the largest superfund site in the country.
Since 2021 my wife and I are now retired, and have relocated to the Villages in Florida. I occasionally wonder if there are other Marian graduates that live in or around this area. It’s a great place to for one to retire.
