John's Story
After I left Toccoa, I rarely went back. Both of my parents were crazy as loons. I have so many painful family memories. I have some great memories from Toccoa though. Toccoa has a special place in my heart. Sometimes I think about retiring there. After we graduated, I went to an all boys Catholic college in Cullman, AL. It was full of crazy guys from up north. It sorta launched my "do anything" phase. I don't think I started to grow up til I was about 30. I tranferred to Mercer U. There I met Pat de Sercey. He came to Mercer as a speaker. He became the most influencial teacher in my life. I transferred to Valdosta St where he taught. Then back to Mercer to graduate. After Mercer I spend a year in Europe. I got accepted to Louvain U to extend my tourist visa. Then worked for a chemical distributor for $0.95/hr. The 70s were rough economic times. I soon found out I am not the corporate type. each math, social studies, & special ed. I've taught at elementary, middle & high schools. I like kindergarten & 1st grade best. I call it playing with puppies. About every 5 years, I get tired of the BS in teaching. I paved roads, opened my own business & managed a KFC. I just completed my 30th year teaching. But I digress. In 1979, I met Cindy Collar. As Celine Dion says, everything I am, is because she loves me. I definitely wouldn't have made it without her. We taught school for a year in Japan. Our oldest son was born there, with a Japanese midwife who didn't speak English. When we came back, we settled in Rockmart, GA. We had two more boys, one born in Rome, the other in Cartersville. Our oldest just graduated from college & the two other are in the military. Hope all of you have found some contentment. Let me know if I have any typing mistakes. I hate them.
