Juan Carlos (John's Story

I have great memories of my four years at Cathedral (1966-1970), from taking full advantage of all the school offered to the friendships of my classmates and wonderful teachers. Upon graduation at CHS I chose to attend Loyola Marymount University where I pursued my pre-medical studies as a Biology major with emphasis on Physiology as a California State Scholar. Concurrently, I also did a minor in Spanish American Literature. Once more... I was blessed with another productive four years and wonderful memories at LMU. They prepared me well and I gained admission to the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) where the next four years were full of awe and incredible scholastic challenges. UCSF was the most magical place of higher learning I have ever come in contact with. I was surrounded by cutting edge professors ( three who taught me went on to win Nobel Prices in Medicine). I grew to love the City of San Francisco and to this day I look for any excuse to visit SF. One week after graduation I married my wife of thirty-nine years and counting. She was a nursing student at UCSF and became part of the Cardiothoracic Service there until we married and moved to Los Angeles so I could begin my surgical training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. ive years of my life becoming a surgeon. It was a whirlwind experience not recommended for the weak of heart, mind, and body. Upon completing my surgical training..., I was recruited as a Trauma Surgeon in South Orange County at Mission Hospital and Trauma Center. Eventually I opened my own private surgical practice as a Board Certified General Surgeon. I became quite active in Medicine serving as President of the Orange County Medical Association and Trustee of the California Medical Association. I served on the Admissions Committee at UCI School of Medicine and was an Assistant Clinical Proffessor in Surgery. During this time my wife and I raised two wonderful children and I was involved in Little League, Soccer, Recitals, Dance, and all that parents do... Then, I slowed down a bit and assisted only on Thoracic surgeries. Approximately eleven years ago I became Chairman of the Board of a major medical liability company in California with about 12,000 physician members. I have now retired and have a new role as Grandpa to two (twins) baby boys in Florida where I now reside in the Tampa Bay Area. If you were interested in what I did after graduation at Cathedral I hope this gives you a quick satisfying synopsis. To all of you I came in contact with at Cathedral.... Thank you for the great memories.
