John's Story

College After High School, my goal was to get into Hotel Restaurant Management. I had started working in local Sharonville Hotels and obtained Asst Manager status at the Ramada Inn and Night Manager at the Days Inn. After several years of taking business courses and trying to work fulltime and listening to "The customer is always right" I decided that this wasn't for me. I got tired of listening to people complain so I got into Police Work where I no longer have to listen to the bitching. (to some extent) Anyways, at this point I dropped out of college and joined the US Coast Guard and began pursuing my career in law enforcment. Workplace I started with the Sharonville Police Department in Sept. 1982 as an Auxiliary Police Officer - which means they paid me $1.00 a year. The pay wasn't much but the experience has lead me to a very rewarding career. I was hired as a full time clerk dispatcher in 1984 where I worked the desk on third shift. I started testing for fulltime Police positions and the City of Cincinnati hired me in 1986 where I was assigned to Dst 4. About a year later Sharonville hired me fulltime and my life's dream was fullfilled. While at Sharonville, I've worked as a Patrol Officer, I was assigned to DART - Drug Abuse Reduction Task Force for 18 months, I served two years in our Detective Division and was promoted to Sgt. in 1996. I was the second shift Sgt. for a few years and I was than promoted to Lt. in 1999. My current job is Patrol Commander - I'm now in charge of the Patrol Division, the Detective Division and our Clerical Divi...Expand for more
sion. My primary work hours are 7AM - 3PM in the office. The office job is good but I sometimes miss the excitement on the streets. This has been a very rewarding experience for me and I still today, love going to work. Military I joined the Coast Guard Reserves as a stepping stone for a career in law enforcement. At the time, law enforcement agencies were giving an additional 20% credit for military service. When I competed on a civil service test, it was difficult to get hired without the military creidt, especially when you were competing with 500 people. In the end, it all worked out for me. I've been with the Sharonville Police Department for 16 years and prior to that I was a Cincinnati Police Officer. My service in the Coast Guard was in Port Security. I was assigned to the Cincinnati office where my main function was inspecting barges and patroling the Ohio and Licking Rivers. Being in the Coast Guard, assigned to the Ohio River was not very glamorous. Very common to hit debris in the river and the smell was terrible, most of the time. I would have preferred Miami Beach, but you don't always get what you want. I did have the opportunity to do a lot of patrols on Lake Erie. The Coast Guards Marble Head station is one of the busiest in the country. It's situated in the area of Put-In-Bay and Kelly's Island. It was very common to go on several search and rescue missions over a three day period. Boat crashes, boats in distress etc. All in all, I was glad I did it but I'm also glad I got out. Reserve Units duty for me was primarily a waste of time.
