John's Story

School I attended first through eighth grades at Faith Lutheran School from 1969 to 1977. Three of my favorite teachers were Mrs Johnson, Ms. Fiedler, and Mr. Bieckman, who was also the principle for my last two or three years. Mrs. Johnson, who taught second grade, had a saying that you should never utter a word that you do not know the meaning of. Simple, but true. Ms. Fiedler taught during our sixth through eighth grade years, and being newly out of teaching college, she brought us a lot of enthusiam for learning. Mr. Bieckman on the other hand, taught with a calm confidence from years of experience that made me want to learn (especially about geography!). In first through fourth grades we had a year-end day trip to Holiday Park. In fifth through eighth grades we went to Snyder Park, where there was swimming and nature trails. It was so much fun to be WITH your classmates in a setting OUTSIDE of school. Another event that I liked was FIELD DAY. If I remember correctly, we went from station to station performing different physical tasks, with the results written on a card, and you could compare the results one to another or from year to year. I also liked Friday after school, when the moms would have a snowcone sale. They were like a dime each! In hindsight, I don't even know if it was much of a fundraiser, but I'm sure glad they did it. We had chaple service on Wednesdays in first through fourth grades, then on Fridays in fifth through eighth grades. We walked from the classroom to the church single file...ALWAYS single file. Towards the end of our eighth grade year, we had a talent show, in which we spoofed the then popular Donnie and Marie Show. It was in the common area between the main school building and the new(at that time) building. It was a blast. I participated in most of the team sports at FLS (except basketball). We played soccer, softball, and track and field. We played against other Lutheran schools, such as St. Marks Lutheran, Prince of Peace Lutheran and Holy Cross. I was very proud to wear the RED and WHITE of Faith Lutheran. Lastly, I'd like to say that I thought of my FLS classmates often, and it seems that the older I get, the more nostalgic I become. So please forgive me for not staying in touch after all these years...the last time I saw most of you was at three get togethers we had that summer after eighth grade. One was at the beach, the second was at Annette K's house and the third was at Melinda's. I miss all of you, and would love to hear from anyone who wants to write. From 1977 to 1981 I attended South Plantation High school. It was a bit of a shock, coming from a small private school, but I quickly adjusted. I played JV football my freshman year, but it was not quite so memorable. I kicked a total of one kick...ONE KICK! My heart was really in the singing, and I put all my energies into chorus. I sang in the Meistersingers (advanced mixed chorus), and the 16 member mixed ensemble each of my four years and enjoyed every minute of it. I had four different chorus directors in each of the four years. My favorite was Mrs Jackson who directed us my junior year. My favorite memories are The HOBO SHOW, which was started by Mrs. (Marti) Miller the year before I came to SPHS, Christmas concerts, district and state competitions, as well as the year end trips we took each year. My freshman year we took a week long cruise to the Bahamas. My sophmore and junior years we attended state competitions, and my senior year we went to St. Augustine. We always had a great time, wherever we went. However my absolute FAVORITE memory is singing for my classmates at our graduation. It was an honor and one that I will never forget! Lastly, I would like to thank all of my chorus friends that made music so much fun for me at SPHS. A special thanks to all of you that played piano accompaniment for me through the years. I couldn't have done it without you! LOVE YOU GUYS! GO PALADINS!!! ...Expand for more
Workplace It seems like I've always had a job...my freshman year in high school I had an after school job at Tropic Formals warehouse. We would clean tuxedos and set them up to be sent out to the stores. Minimum wage was like 2.45 an hour, and I road my bike more than a half-hour EACH WAY for a 3 hour shift. One of the perks was that I could use any tux that I wanted, free of charge. So for the SPHS chorus trip to the Bahamas, I took a dark blue CRUSHED VELVET tux as well as a lime green tux with black trim! What can I say...it was 1978. A couple of years later I had a job at a place called DAILY DINNERS where "We bring the evening meal to area homes". Again, I worked in the warehouse, unloading vans that had been used for delivery. Sometimes on the weekends I worked with the catering crew, grilling for large picnics and corporate parties. It was hard work, but it was fun. The perk of working there was that all of the employees ate free. Usually the weekday crew would sit down together and eat, while the weekend crew had to catch it on the run. Oh, I just remembered...the coolest thing about catering was that we catered the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers (pro soccer) locker room, as well as the Owners box (Joe and Elizabeth Robbie) at Lockhart Stadium. That was pretty cool. Later, I worked as a janitor (there's a good story...that can't be told!), apartment maintenance(another good one), and later for my brother (no leniency!) By the mid-eighties, I was ready for another direction. While working a full time job, I was driving a shuttle bus before and after work then would go wait tables for four to five hours after that. That was BRUTAL, but it led to the next phase...restaurant management. I worked with Western Sizzlin' (not to be confused with The Sizzler), both in Hollywood, and at the store near Melrose Park on state road 7 for a couple of years. Then I took more money and WAY more aggravation to join Burger King. When you sign the agreement to become a salaried assistant manager, you are told the work week will be about fifty hours...NOT! I bet in three years I never worked less than sixty hours in a week, and seventy hours was not unheard of. In the late eighties, I switched my allegiance from burgers to pizza, and joined Little Caesars (what's with all these ROYALTY themed restaurants anyway?). After training and working as an assistant manager for just a few months, I was promoted to store manager and was answering every phone call with "Thanks for calling Little Caesar's on Davie boulevard and 31st avenue, would you like to try our MEATSA MEATSA PIZZA PIZZA today?". It just rolls off your tongue! I decided to get out of the restaurant business (NEVER to return again!), and do something that I would really enjoy doing. I worked for the BEST fish and aquarium store in south Florida...Fish's Paradise. The main store was in a stand alone building on Hallandale Beach Boulevard, and they kept the inside of the store dimly lit to show off the fish in the tanks. It was awesome! About this time, I was seperating from my first wife and was living in a nice (but small) effeciency apartment in Hallandale. My life couldn't have been better! Most days I woke up early, grabbed my snorkle gear, and drove down to Bear Cut (just over the Rickenbacher Causeway) on Key Biscayne and snorkeled for a few hours. Then I'd head back home, get changed, and go to work at a tropical fish store. How great was that! After several months of absolute BLISS, my first wife and I got back together (all good things MUST come to an end!), and after a few months we moved to Jacksonville, where I now live. Once here, I proceded to get the worst job ever (see favorites to the right), and we got divorced (there's no connection between job and divorce!). I worked as a groundskeeper for two years then started CULBREATH LAWN CARE and LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE, now in my 13th year. I'm getting restless though...might it be time for a change?
